Netherlands: Campaign to Ban Arabic in Mosques

ROTTERDAM, July 22 (IslamOnline) - Only few weeks after the rightist parties won the general elections in Netherlands, members from "Rotterdam is Suitable For Life" Party in the local parliament of the Dutch economic capital began a strong campaign to ban the Arabic language in mosques.

The party which won the local elections has demanded that the Imams of mosques give the Friday addresses and all other religious lessons in Dutch or in a language called "Friss" which is a local language of a small community that holds the same name (Friss) and live in Frissland county, northern Netherlands.

"Giving Islamic lessons and addresses in Arabic or Turkish makes it difficult to watch and censor. Moreover, using many languages doesn’t help minorities merge into society." Said Mat Smitt member of the extreme rightist party in a press interview Monday, July 22.

Many rightist extremists demanded imposing censorship and surveillance on Imams of mosques following the broadcast of pieces of Friday addresses on a Dutch T.V channel. Political and media circles claimed they are encouraging hatred and inciting Muslims to be violent against those considered enemies.

But the call by "Rotterdam is Suitable For Life" ,which has the biggest share of representation in the local parliament, to adopt the Dutch language as the language of addresses in mosques is the first demand of its kind given that the constitution of the country stresses the separation between religion and politics and bans authorities from interference into the affairs of religious institutions including mosques.

On the other hand, and within efforts by the Muslim minority to face those challenges made by the Dutch extreme right, Mohammad Alseni, head of "Islam and Patriotism”, announced the establishment of a federation to represent the Muslim minority in front of the government and all official circles.

"Seven federal Muslim organizations representing 70% of about one million Muslims in Netherlands will meet next October to elect a unified federation to represent them in front of the government.” Said Seni to IslamOnline correspondent referring to the reality that such a step was always a demand of the Dutch government .

Seni, who comes from Moroccan origins, expressed his confidence that the Muslim federal organizations will be able to reach positive results that reflect the positive spirit prevailing during preparatory meetings.

Many bids took place during the past 20 years to establish such a representative federation for the Muslims in Netherlands, but none of them worked! The main reason behind failures was the lack of recognition from all parties of the Muslim community. Moreover, Dutch Muslims tend to suspect the intentions and goals of those who take such initiatives. So Muslim activists expect failure to Seni's initiative despite the formal big support.

Corrections:

- "Rotterdam is Suitable For Life" Party is 'Livable Rotterdam'
- the Dutch constitution does not completly seperates politics and religion, therefor there are parties like the Christian Conservatives (CDA), Christian Union (CU) and SGP (Reformed Christians). Also schools are able to call themselves Christian and have special eduction on that subject, even with government backing.
- "Friss" means 'Fries' and it's the official language of the Province of Friesland.

Political and media circles claimed they are encouraging hatred and inciting Muslims to be violent against those considered enemies

Recently news-program NOVA recored sectrly preaches by imams and they found out they preached hatred against the West, about beating your wife and warning against integration. It cause unrest and in Tilburg (where on of these imams preached) people demanded that the mosque was to be closed. But the local politicians made a deal: the preaches of the imam would be recored again and translated. And (yes, you guess it) there were no calls for hate and jihad against the West. But people are not stupid, they just elected a right-winged government. Only lefties could think this would convince anyone! Of course, other lefties are stupid enough to believe!

Dang! They've gone from one extreme to the other.

Let's hope our government officials take notice and start doing similar things here.

It won't happen though. But the thing is that these people need to know that telling their followers to go out and jihad about is not appreciated.

I think this is a great idea! At the very least, require - under penalty of law, to include fines and imprisonment - that a true and accurate translation of the material be provided in the language of the dominant culture.

I'm in favor of legislation like this. It will become much harder for Muslims to justify their vicious, genocidal religious tendencies if they have to reconcile them to their daily lives in the languages and mores of their adopted countries.

Holland - where the aged fear for their lives in the hospital, homosexuals can legally seduce your 12-yr. old, pornography is visible to little kids on the streets, abortion is exported to other countries on baby-killing ships and government services are provided to active heroin users. Now - no Arab in the mosques? It's so, so, so intolerant...

Personally, I have a problem with the government coming into a religious institution and telling you what language you can or can't speak. I don't believe such a law would ever pass there.

On the other hand, I have no problem with Arabic-speaking informants, or some "concerned private citizens" secretly recording services and reporting to the police anything that is said that may violate Dutch law, such as inciting violence.

Possibly the first step towards the consideration of islam as an ideology, not allowing it hide behing the figleaf of religion.

Advocating seditious, treasonous behavior under the guise of religion should not be tolerated.

This is the key to much of the war on terror in general. We've got to get people inside these various organizations that are creating a generation of homicidal martyrs.

Over the past 20 years we've tried to rely much too heavily on outside electronic surveillance. We need to "develop" human assets on the inside.

Oh, come on, people, this is just goofy. Should we ban Hebrew in synagogues? Latin in Catholic churches?

As dead as dead can be
It once killed the Romans
And now its killing me!
