"One of the most popular books of all time is "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire," written in 1788 by Edward Gibbon. The book set forth five basic reasons why great civilizations wither and die:
- The undermining of the dignity and sanctity of the home, which is the basis for human society;
- Higher and higher taxes and the spending of public money for free bread and circuses for the populace;
- The mad craze for pleasure -- sports becoming every year more exciting, more brutal, more immoral;
- The building of great armaments when the real enemy is within -- the decay of individual responsibility;

The average age of the world's civilizations has been 200 years. Civilizations and empires tend to progress through this sequence, say historians:

- from liberty to abundance
- from abundance to selfishness
- from selfishness to complacency
- from complacency to apathy
- from apathy to dependence
- from dependence back again to bondage

"As with so many of history's so-called trends, America's transformation into global policeman isn't accidental. Official admissions of this little-known truth aren't commonplace, but they do occur. In December 1917 the Inquiry, a group of eager reformers who included a young Walter Lippmann, secretly met in New York to draw up Wilson's Fourteen Points. In 1941, FDR concocted the Atlantic Charter in the mists off Newfoundland. The dense woods of New Hampshire gave birth to the Bretton Woods institutions — the IMF and World Bank — in 1944. And a year later the United Nations came to life at the secluded Georgetown estate of Dumbarton Oaks.... So what emerged took us more or less by surprise. We had built a global order without quite realizing it, bit by bit, era by era, with our usual schizoid approach: alternating engagement and withdrawal.... Like it or not — and clearly large numbers of Americans still don't — we Americans are now part of an organic whole with the world that George Washington wanted to keep distant."

Hillary, Cronkite call for world government

In a more recent interview with the BBC, Cronkite was not quite so delicate in his plea for world government. There was no call for an American-style tri-partite system. What Cronkite described sounded more like a militaristic world dictatorship. The BBC's Tim Sebastian asked Cronkite if the United Nations had lived up to his earlier dreams for a "Parliament of Nations." Here's what he said in response:
- "I wouldn't give up on the U.N. yet. I think we are realizing that we are going to have to have an international rule of law. We need not only an executive to make international law, but we need the military forces to enforce that law and the judicial system to bring the criminals to justice before they have the opportunity to build military forces that use these horrid weapons that rogue nations and movements can get hold of -- germs and atomic weapons."
Note that Cronkite advocates having "an executive" make international law. That's the way it works, I guess, in Cuba, Iraq, Libya and a few other totalitarian hellholes around the world. Is that what Cronkite has in mind? And this executive -- presumably unelected and unaccountable, except, perhaps, to a handful of Cronkite's elitist friends -- would be backed by a global military monopoly that would hunt down rebels even before they armed themselves or committed any "international crime." So now the "newsman" is advocating the creation of global thought police. Hmmmm.
But it gets worse.
- "American people are going to begin to realize they are going to have to yield some sovereignty to an international body to enforce world law, and I think that's going to come to other people as well," he says. "It's a fair distance to get there, but we are not ever going to get there unless we keep trying to push ourselves onto the road."
