QADIR, a Pashtun from the Northern Alliance and also public works minister, was shot at by two gunmen as he drove into his office compound, Kabul police chief Basir Salangi told reporters.
Some 36 rounds were fired, smashing the car windscreen and riddling the side with holes. Salangi said 10 guards, who had been appointed by Qadirs predecessor at the public works ministry, Abdul Khaliq Fazal, had been arrested.
International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) officers said they were investigating.

We are forgetting our purpose in Afghan. We did not go there to build democracy, nor should we bother attempting such. We went there to kill people. Let's keep that in mind.

True, but if democracy isn't maintained, or at least some control over things, Al Quaeda will soon have Afghanistan back as a base. We can't let that happen.

Democratic values cannot be imposed on peoples who have no interest in them. As for Al Queda, luring them back into the open where our weapons are more usable against them might be a good idea.

My bet its Al Qaeda. They sent a message that the Afghan regime set up by the U.S isn't safe from them...

Although it may be Al-Qaeda, it’s possibly tribal. Afganistan isn’t unified as a country and has a lot of back-biting rivalry. They need to find their own ‘King Arthur’ to unify them. If they can’t - pull out and leave them to kill each other.

Karzai never said it would be a democracy did he? I understood it was going to be an islamic state. I remember only because at the time I posted I thought we should not help unless whoever we put in place would agree to a democracy and that was not the case.
To: snippy_about_it
Democracy is not that easy a game to get to, and in Islam it's virtually impossible. Democratic systems are based on the ability of free men to stand and take responsibility for their own lives and actions. Islam is based on men being on their knees, with their faces buried in the sand, submitting.

News says it was Abdul Haq's relative. Interesting. Haq was captured and hanged by pro-Taliban in the war. Seems like this clan isn't doing too well. This assassination might be as significant as Massoud's and we just don't know it yet. The pictures of this fellow make it appear that he was pro-western at least in dress.

Very sad situation over there. It's no wonder we left them before to try to establish "something" of a government. There is so much hate and rivalry amongst themselves, they are their own victims.
Cutting off hands, feet...stoning..This is sick stuff.
A religion that invokes the destruction of all other religions.
A Pure Islamic State (This is what our government restricts in the Constitution by the way).
I truly pray for President Karzai and the formation of some type of stable government but until the people of Afghanistan start thinking in a different, more tolerant way, it is unlikely.

Putting someone in place didn't work in Vietnam. An Islamic Democracy isn't out of the question, an alliance with the West isn't out of the question, but it is up to them. Their choice could result in another 10 years of conflict or some degree of prosperity.
