Israel seized 236 stolen cars in West Bank during June: radio

JERUSALEM, June 29 (AFP) - Israeli security forces have seized 236 stolen cars in the West Bank this month, army radio said Saturday.

They also arrested 40 Palestinians suspected of stealing cars, it said, adding the cars were seized in the towns of Ramallah, Bethlehem and Hebron.

The army last week raided the West Bank villages of Beit Jala and Dohar, near Bethlehem, and seized more than 60 stolen cars, Palestinian security sources had said.

Stolen Israeli cars have often been used for driving Palestinian attackers to their targets inside Israel because they attract less attention than Palestinian-registered cars.

Israeli cars have yellow number plates, while Palestinian cars have white and green plates.

Palestinian cars may not enter Israeli territory without a special permit.

The news would be even better if the thiefs' Israeli accessories were arrested, too.

It's a public secret that if you want to rip off your insurance company, it's enough to park your car for couple of nights near the hospital in Kfar-Saba... and sure enough, it will be stolen and dismantled.

It's a huge grey area industry in Israel, and some Israelis has nothing against making fat profits in it, even though they know terrorists do use these cars to infiltrate the country.

I remember the big scam in Lithuania when I was there,cars stolen in France,Belgium,Germany etc would lob at the Sunday markets after mafia reregistration and a clean bill of health...first thing Monday you'd see the cues for weekly work permits outside the German consulate etc knowing probably a third of them were car thieves...aren't relatively open borders a swell thing.
