UPDATE FROM REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE

28 June 2002

Radical Court in San Francisco Rules the Pledge of Allegiance Unconstitutional

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco has ruled that the Pledge of Allegiance is unconstitutional. Americans should be outraged at this irresponsible decision. This radical court found that the reciting of the pledge by teachers and students "amounts to a government endorsement of religion," going so far as to compare the phrase "under God" with "under Zeus." Just last month this same court found that certain people could smoke marijuana on federal lands if it is part of their religion.

This ruling is further proof that we need to end the judicial crisis and fill the vacancies with the men and women of distinction that President Bush has nominated. Today, there are 31 circuit judges missing from the bench. President Bush has nominated quality individuals to fill nearly 90% of these vacancies. All of these nominations are languishing in the Senate.

While has sought to place responsible, common sense jurists in our courts, Democrats in the Senate continue to play partisan games. Make sure your community knows that you are outraged that the judicial crisis is being perpetuated by partisan games. Write your news editors today!

President Bush & Republicans in Congress Work for Prescription Drugs for Seniors

President Bush has outlined a vision for modernizing Medicare and maintaining our moral commitment to seniors. Republicans in Congress have responded to President Bush's call for comprehensive, affordable prescription drug coverage for American's seniors. They are working to pass a plan that will provide a permanent prescription drug benefit to seniors and catastrophic coverage. Under the Republican plan seniors who now pay full retail prices for prescription drugs would see their overall out-of-pocket drug costs fall by as much as 70 percent-in exchange for a stable and affordable premium starting at $34 a month!

House Republicans have pledged to pass a prescription drug plan before the Fourth of July. In contrast, Senator Daschle has hindered the work of a bi-partisan group of Senators working for a prescription drug plan in favor of a partisan proposal that would end in 2010. Democrats have even unleashed a "message team" that has received a low 20% rank from the United Seniors Association to sell their short-term plan for prescription drugs.

President Bush Calls for New Leadership in Palestine

On Monday, President Bush outlined a plan to bring peace and security to Israel, dignity and prosperity to Palestinians and a new spirit of Freedom to the Middle East. This plan is predicated on all parties rejecting terrorism and the Palestinian people electing new leadership not compromised by terror.

"My vision is two states, living side by side in peace and security. There is simply no way to achieve that peace until all parties fight terror. Yet, at this critical moment, if all parties will break with the past and set out on a new path, we can overcome the darkness with the light of hope. Peace requires a new and different Palestinian leadership, so that a Palestinian state can be born."

The President promised that if the Palestinian people pursue democracy, tolerance, and liberty, America will support their efforts. And if the Palestinian people have "new leaders, new institutions, and new security arrangements," America will support the creation of a provisional Palestinian state.

Unfortunately, we have nothing going on here in Washington State at the federal level. However, Gordon Smith in Oregon is running for reelection and seems to be pretty secure now that Kitzhaber chose not to run. I am curious about the Montana race - Baucus vs. the GOP guy. I can't remember his name but it would be heaven to have Baucus go down!!

Having Baucus lose would be great!!! I think we might just do it! I am going to go check a chart I have with the possibilities! It is showing that we have a possible chance to pick up Montana -- I will take that this far out from the election.
