WASHINGTON -- Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill urged the House on Sunday to follow the Senate's lead and raise the federal debt limit to ensure that the government won't run out of borrowing room this week.

"We need the House of Representatives to come together in a bipartisan, nonpartisan way and do the thing that's necessary so we can not have this shadow over our ability to pay our fair and true debts," O'Neill said on ABC's "This Week."

"They need to do it, without doubt, and I can't believe they're going to fail the country."

"I am not among those who fear the people. They, and not the rich, are our dependence for continued freedom. And to preserve their independence, we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our election between economy and liberty, or profusion and servitude."

--Thomas Jefferson to Samuel Kercheval, July 12, 1816

I like Tom Tomorrow sometimes. But this one is a perfect example of a seeming leftie knowing that the current conflict doesn't fit their prejudices. Instead of evolving, they omit and declare "Censorship!" at any challenge of ritualistic cant. Surprising here, because I read where he said he didn't feel censored, despite the BBC's prompting to say so in the British Left's parallel project to make it seem that American's un-leftie views were somehow coerced, rather than content driven. They hate it when the facts don't jibe with their worldview, and worldview they think is their "turf."

"Completely disinterested in the roots and/or geopolitical context of the current conflict."

He should visit FR more. This is the problem of the left. They are silent because understanding the "context" is not important to them if it doesn't further the anti-American narrative. I read some recent Chumpsky pieces of text. He's losing it - talking about Turkey and Kurds - messaging to lefties to hold on to a country that we can say is "bad" and our enemy (rarely includes Arabs - can hurt those mass "buys" of his books.)

Someone said it's unpatriotic to oppose Corporate tax cuts? Don't know but his comment about ANWR shows that he is disinterested in the geopolitical context of the current crisis. He doesn't seem to buy the Leftie/Saudi Palestinianization plan, though.

Blissfully untroubled?

Well, I've considered them. One or two trouble me.

And he throws in religion? He should try explaining some of the "context" he thinks we are disinterested in. He should read up on some Rushdie

Ronald Reagan sanctioned huge deficits, under the theory that high deficits would squeeze social spending.

We're fighting a war, pal, or did you forget?

The "surplus" under Clinton cost 3,000 American lives.

Savage's schtick is blasting whomever is in office...that's how he keeps his audience jacked up.

Financial deregulation, the S&L crisis and subsequent bailout added a cool $-TRILLION to the debt as well.
Makes the Enron fiasco look like a child's busted piggy bank.
There were nowhere near enough scalliwags lynched for that one.

pal? pal? First of all you are not my pal...second when you get as many combat ribbons and combat promotions as I you can talk to me about war...in the mean time keep your ignorant comments in texas...or enlist and find out about war on a first hand basis...this is not a war this is a waste of taxpayers money...if this was a war we would have bombed Medina and Mecca on 9/12...rounded up all the towelheads living on US soil and sent them back to sandlot hell! The lack of FBI, CIA & NSA interagency intelligence cooperation failed...had nothing to do with the surplus...where did you get your economics degree....university of alamo...Bush with his illegal alien amnesty, universal medical insurance and lack of a spine (he has not vetoed one spending bill since he arrived), has refused to secure the borders, federalized airport security (another Dimwit idea), might as well be in the Dimwit party....Bush is a fraud and a RINO...

Refusing to up the debt limit after the money is spent is well - sort of like closing the barn door after the horses are gone. This debt exercise is solely one of posturing, and solely for the cameras. It has no meaning, and of course is always raised in the end, since no one except some loons at FR want the government to shut down.

You might have gotten a couple of purty ribbons, but it's obvious you weren't in charge of jack-sh*t!

No knowledge of military tactics, and a bit of a racist to boot.

Bush is a fraud and a RINO...

Glad you're not in uniform anymore. No respect for the commander--in-chief.

We salute the office not the man. You really should keep your comments to yourself and let people think you a fool than open and remove all doubt. I worked for LBJ and he sent thousands of my brother Marines to their graves rather than admit he made a mistake sending us into Viet Nam in 1965. We saluted LBJ but we sure as hell did not respect him. Put it to bed junior. You are in way over your head.

I'm not your "junior," buster. I honor your service in Vietnam, but you've lost your way since then.

Why doesn't the Treasury issue some long term notes at the current low interest rates and try to retire some of the earlier notes? (Maybe they have done this.)

The treasury notes do not have a call feature. That is why they are the instrument of choice for hedges.

This has nothing to do with racism...Muslims come in all races...but then if you had ever read a book or a newspaper once in a while you would already know that. This is a religious conflict. Oh you are my junior and your lack of respect for those who have "those purty ribbons" as you put it proves I am senior to you in more than one way. Brush your teeth, drink your milk, and when you hit your knees tonight thank God that there were and are men like me out there to fight the wars while people like you stay at home hiding behind your computer screens.

OK. You're a tough guy. You can think whatever the hell you want.

Ok. Then perhaps just issuing more notes now (long term) may help. The normal expiration of the notes even without calls may help.

...this is not a war this is a waste of taxpayers money...

This is a war on the Constitution and the Bill of Rights due to a criminal act by a terrorist group. The Bush administration should be ashamed of framing this response as a war, but they are globalist scoundrels committed to advancing their cause.
