Published 12:00 a.m. PDT Saturday, June 15, 2002 LOS ANGELES (AP) - A 22-year Immigration and Naturalization Service veteran was indicted Friday by a federal grand jury on charges of bribery and selling unlawful or stolen immigration documents.
Maria Chica, 52, an information officer, allegedly gave an INS work permit to an undercover FBI agent who posed as an undocumented alien. Chica accepted money for the card, authorities said.
The indictment also alleges that Chica sold 22 INS permanent resident cards to a confidential informant of the FBI. The cards had been returned to the agency because of typographical errors. They were supposed to have been destroyed.
Instead, the indictment alleges, Chica stole them and sold them for $3,500 to the FBI agent.
Chica faces two counts of bribery, one count of fraud and misuse of INS documents and two counts of possessing identification documents that were either stolen from the INS or obtained by fraud, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Elisa Fernandez.
If convicted, Chica faces up to 15 years in federal prison.
The fraud surrounding Mexican immigration, our government, and the INS is stunning and so completely out of control. Fraud on top of fraud. Truly scary stuff, and just the tip of the iceburg in this titanic invasion of millions.
I doubt she's been doing this for her entire 22 years at the INS. I'm inclined to bet she's probably been at this for, oh, say . . . 8 years. Possibly starting just prior to the 1996 election.
Not NEARLY enough prison time, post 9-11. IMO, she should be charged with Treason, sentenced to death.
We had an information officer here in Phoenix doing the same thing. We suspected it for a long time, but no one could get the goods on her.
During this time she continually bashed the Immigration Inspector and stated many times that we were over paid idiots that could not catch anyone.
Needless to say, it was an Immigration Inspector in Nogales that took her down. She is now sitting in the Federal Pen.
Uh, I missed something here. What would the 96 elections have to do with this individual committing fraud?
