The Last Words of Edmund Ruffin, Southern Patriot
1865 | Edmund Ruffin

Posted on 06/05/2002 8:53:55 AM PDT by TexConfederate1861

"I here declare my unmitigated hatred to Yankee rule -- to all political, social and business connection with the Yankees and to the Yankee race. Would that I could impress these sentiments, in their full force, on every living Southerner and bequeath them to every one yet to be born! May such sentiments be held universally in the outraged and downtrodden South, though in silence and stillness, until the now far-distant day shall arrive for just retribution for Yankee usurpation, oppression and atrocious outrages, and for deliverance and vengeance for the now ruined, subjugated and enslaved Southern States!

..And now with my latest writing and utterance, and with what will be near my latest breath, I here repeat and would willingly proclaim my unmitigated hatred to Yankee rule--to all political, social and business connections with Yankees, and the perfidious, malignant and vile Yankee race."

"As for the WTC, I used to work in it smart ass, did you?"

Actually, I did at one point. I guess despite your desire for yankees to stay in "yankeeland" you couldn't resist coming up to pay a visit.

"And what is the extent of your military service if any?

Who cares? Do you need to be a jockey to talk about horses? Do you have to be a politician to discuss politics? What is your point? For the record I have no military experience and my current para-military work is, frankly, none of your business.

"Since this "backward" South, is the place where the most military training bases and installations in the US reside, including my state where Fort Bragg (the largest military installation in the world) is located, you might want to rethink your assumptions. "

The number of bases means little to me other than the price of real estate is probably lower there. They're not going to put an installation in central park. Again, I fail to see your point. Are there more southernors in the military? I don't know. Though it wouldn't surprise me if on average they had a stronger desire to camp in the woods and break things for low pay than most yankees. But we didn't fall apart without the south in the 19th century, and we wouldn't now either. Despite your diatribes we have more than enough talent, intelligence and courage right here to get the job done.

...the contention that the War Between the States was a moral crusade by the sanctified Union against the sinister Confederacy to abolish slavery?

Of course not. For Lincoln and the Union the war was fought to preserve the Union, no more and no less. Lincoln summed it up perfectly when he wrote to Horace Greely.

"I would save the Union. I would save it the shortest way under the Constitution. The sooner the national authority can be restored; the nearer the Union will be "the Union as it was." If there be those who would not save the Union, unless they could at the same time save slavery, I do not agree with them. If there be those who would not save the Union unless they could at the same time destroy slavery, I do not agree with them. My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union. I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause, and I shall do more whenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause. I shall try to correct errors when shown to be errors; and I shall adopt new views so fast as they shall appear to be true views."

On the other hand, I firmly belive, and the body of evidence more than supports it, that the south entered into the rebellion because of what they saw as a threat to their institution of slavery. All the other issues that sothron supporters throw out - state's rights, authoritarian central government, whatever - all come back to slavery for their central theme. Without slavery the rebellion never happens. Having said that, I make no moral judgement on the south because of slavery. My beef is with the rebellion, regardless of the reason. Looking back over 140 years it is easy to talk about 'evil south' but the fact is that slavery was legal. I don't disapprove of the south's actions any more because they did if for slavery, and I wouldn't disapprove of them any less if they had did it for any other reason.

But if this becomes an unsubstantiated tirade about race, racism, and ethnic/cultural guilt, then forget it.

I'm not about to get into that. Race relations up North were little better than those down south. Free blacks up North couldn't vote in most states, couldn't serve on juries in most states, couldn't serve in the militias in most states. The fact that they couldn't do that in any southern state doesn't give the North any moral superiority.

Yeah, mostly TRAILER homes, souped-up road-hog trucks, and barns that look as thought they're about to fall down of their own accord.

Whenever I see that stupid flag, I know the one sporting it has a brain the size of a pea.

That, btw, from someone who, except for a sojourn or two, has lived in the Deep South all his life.

Note I'm talking about the OFFICE of President, not of Founding Father.

Jefferson and Madison were decent enough men, but as Presidents they presided over nations at peace, with civil strife at a minimum save for that ugly little Whiskey Rebellion incident. The Monroe Doctrine was a good deal, but that pretty much sums up Mr. Madison's PRESIDENCY.

Jackson, interestingly enough, was the one who backed South Carolina down on Nullification--a fact that most neo-Confederates who want to say "it all started with Lincoln" conveniently forget to mention.

But Lincoln pulled this nation back from the brink. Because of his inspired leadership, we are a great nation today, instead of a bunch of banana republics.

Well, to be sure by 1863 there were SIX states that allowed black men to vote--all of them in the Northeast.

This would NEVER have happened in the slaveholding states. In fact, it was Lincoln's strong hint, in a speech given shortly after his second inaugural, that he favored universal enfranchisement of the Negro, that doomed him to death at the hands of Booth. Booth heard the newsies crying on the streetcorner, picked up a newspaper, and made up his mind to kill this "tyrant" who was about to perform the ultimate act of disrespect to the white race.

We can talk about prejudice throughout the U.S. at that time all we want, but the difference in degree was profound.

And most of those who DID actively persecute blacks in the North were themselves unskilled laborers, especially recent immigrants from Ireland, who saw free blacks as a threat to displace them in the workplace.

Awwww......all that truth just bothers you HUH?

1.

We are a band of brothers, And native to the soil, Fighting for our Liberty, With treasure, blood, and toil; And when our rights were threaten'd, The cry rose near and far, Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag, that bears a Single Star!

CHORUS

Hurrah! Hurrah! for Southern Rights Hurrah! Hurrah! for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a Single Star!

2.

As long as the Union was faithful to her trust, Like friends and like bretheren kind were we and just; But now when Northern treachery attempts our rights to mar, We hoist the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a Single Star.

(CHORUS)

3.

First, gallant South Carolina, nobly made the stand; Then came Alabama, who took her by the hand; Next, quickly Mississippi, Georgia and Florida, All rais'd on high the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a Single Star!

(CHORUS)

4.

Ye men of valor, gather round the Banner of the Right, Texas and fair Louisana, join us in fight; Davis, our loved President, and Stphens, Stateman rare, Now rally round the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a Single Star.

(CHORUS)

5.

And hear's to brave Virginia! the Old Dominion State With the young Confederacy at length has link'd her fate; Impell'd by her example, now other State[s] prepare To hoist on high the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a Single Star.

(CHORUS)

6.

Then cheer, boys, raise the joyous shout, For Arkansas and North Carolina now have both gone out; And let another rousing cheer for Tennessee be given To Single Star of the Bonnie Blue Flag has grown to be Eleven.

(CHORUS)

7.

Then here's to Confederacy, strong we are and brave, Like patriots of old, we'll fight our heritage to save; And rather than submit to shame, to die we would prefer, So cheer for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a Single Star.

CHORUS

Hurrah! Hurrah! for Southern Rights Hurrah! Hurrah! for the Bonnie Blue Flag has gain'd th' Eleventh Star!

Actually the pattern was "Rebs make incredible attacks out the outset, start to roll up line, Yanks get into their set, counterattack, and then ultimately the Rebs meet disaster."

Gettysburg is the PERFECT example of this. After G'Burg, the myth of R. E. Lee's invincibility melted away like frost on a warm day.

No, I just found it amazing that it hadn't been pulled, or at the very least been moved off the latest posts page. I am from Texas, BTW, but I remain humble in my arrogance.

I seem to have gotten over the War of Northern Aggression.

The Battle Cry of Freedom

Yes, we'll rally 'round the flag, boys
We'll rally once again
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
We will rally from the hillside
We'll gather from the plain
Shouting the battle cry of freedom.

Chorus

The Union forever, hurrah, boys, hurrah!
Down with the traitor, up with the star!
While we rally 'round the flag, boys,
Rally once again
Shouting the battle cry of freedom.

We are springing to the call
For three hundred thousand more
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
And we'll fill the vacant ranks
Of our brothers gone before
Shouting the battle cry of freedom.

Chorus

We will wecome to our numbers
The loyal, true and brave
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
And although he may be poor
He shall never be a slave
Shouting the battle cry of freedom.

Chorus

So we're springing to the call
From the East and from the West
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
And we'll hurl the rebel crew
From the land we love the best
Shouting the battle cry of freedom.

Not enough to call it by it's proper name, War of Southern Rebellion.

Since Jeff Davis never ran against another candidate and considering the way he crapped all over the confederate constitution I would put him in the "Despot" list ahead of Lincoln.
