Reward Offered for Recovery of Explosives

San Francisco, CA - Special Agent In Charge (SAC) John A. Torres, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, (ATF), San Francisco Field Division, announced today a $5,000 reward to anyone providing information that leads to the recovery of stolen explosives, or to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

ATF special agents and Siskiyou County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a theft of 700 pounds of explosives reported stolen from a mining operation in Scott Bar, California. The theft was discovered and reported to authorities on May 18, 2002.

SAC Torres is requesting the public's assistance and committing ATF resources to follow up on leads. "Someone knows something, although it may seem irrelevant, every lead helps", Torres said. Anyone having information should immediately contact the ATF Sacramento Office at 916-498-5100 or 1-888-ATF-BOMB.

Someone is probably planning to return those explosives complete with detonating devices installed. They probably aren't interested in the reward. Bad news.

Apparently it hasn't occurred to the ATF that citizens could more effectively help with this case if we knew what KIND of explosives we're supposed to be looking out for.

Dynamite.

SAN FRANCISCO — The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms posted a $5,000 reward Friday for information leading to the location of a cache of explosives that was stolen earlier this month.

Special Agent in Charge John Torres said the explosives were stolen on May 18 from a mining operation in Scott Bar, Calif., near the Oregon state line border.

According to officials and the Siskiyou County sheriff's department, 700 pounds of dynamite were stolen, which is about two mining seasons' worth of explosives for the business.

Officials said there was no apparent terrorist link to the theft, but they could not rule out the possibility.

ATF officials urged anyone with information to call 1-800-ATF-BOMB.

Maybe the FBI stole them, and is building car bombs for their Boston mob pals. Hey, anything for a buck....

$5000.00 is way too low of a reward amount. They have to at least match the $25,000 that the Saudies and Saddam are providing to the families of the would be Jihad bomber(s).

Combine this news with the still missing drums of cyanide, the SAM missiles, and the ME scuba diving enthusiasts.... geez. Not a pleasant picture.

Would have been more effective if they would have announced this on May 18th.

is about two mining seasons' worth of explosives for the business.

Seems almost like it was in stockpile for the express purpose of being stolen. Dynamite gets old, after a while.

How long, I'm not sure.

700 pounds of dynamite are stolen, and the thieves just drive away with it?

I don't understand why it was so easy for them to steal this stuff!

If it makes you feel any better, the Mexican gov't is claiming they've found all the missing cyanide.

The mine it was stolen from is up in the back of the beyond and the miners were off for a few weeks. Supposedly everything was locked up in cases that would take some expertise and equipment to get into.

Special Agent in Charge John Torres said the explosives were stolen on May 18

On the news earlier I heard that the mining company discovered it was missing on May 18th, when they did their inventory. They think it's been missing since May 1st.

The agent on earlier said they felt that whoever took the dynamite knew what they were doing.

Under no circumstances are we to get involved. Do we want this to be a snitch site? Muslims are peaceful. We should only look for Scandanavian women because they are the ones causing trouble around the world.

Special Agent in Charge John Torres said the explosives were stolen from a gold mining operation in Scott Bar, Calif., near the Oregon state line border. According to the Siskiyou County sheriff's department, 700 pounds of dynamite were stolen, which is about two mining seasons' worth of explosives for the business. The dynamite sticks were stolen between April 6 and May 18 from two locked boxes stored deep in the mine. ATF officials said the thieves had to cut through a door to get to the explosives. Officials said there was no apparent terrorist link to the theft, but they could not rule out the possibility. ATF officials urged anyone with information to call 1-888-ATF-BOMB. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
