In the real world, how would this be accomplished and what are the consequences?

Simply cut off all military and economic aid. Pull the troops home and stop sending welfare. The consequences are that the rest of the world would heave a collective sigh of relief.

Yeah. The East Germans who struggled under it for 50 years were thrilled.

I'm sure you simply forgot the .

Just in case you missed it, the East Germans were ruled by the Soviets during that time, and the Marshall plan didn't apply.....

I have trouble thinking of Germans as allies. It's like with Barney Fife ....he might carry a gun, but Andy knows to keep the bullet.

We did that in 1919 Dog. Never again.

Like it or not, we're up to our eyeballs in everything ... that's the fact.

The Marshall plan is exactly WHY the east Germans were ruled by the Soviets.

I hope you don't mind my sharing it with other like-minded folks.

I'm sure all ten of them will really appreciate it.

The Marshall plan is exactly WHY the east Germans were ruled by the Soviets.

You can't possibly believe that.

I must at this point confess my utter amazement. You, of all people, playing the "poor victimized Soviets were just reacting to the Western threat" card -- it's a shocking development, to say the least.

According to C-SPAN's web page, the speech will be broadcast on C-SPAN 2 at 8:30 p.m. EDT on Thursday.

On February 25, 1948, the West reacted in shock to a Soviet-led coup in Czechoslovakia. As a result of that coup, opposition to the Marshall Plan, which was said by opponents to hamper domestic recovery, was curtailed.

East Germany was under Communist control because the Soviets had advanced into German territory from the west. They controlled the territory and therefore controlled the type of government East Germany had. The Marshall Plan, which wasn't instituted until 1948, had nothing to do with why East Germany was communist.

It is hard to take the criticism of President Bush seriously when people casually demonstrate their lack of basic historical knowledge.

I said nothing of the "vicimization" of the Soviets. That is your injection and it has no basis.

The US agreed to the carving up of Europe and chose not to oppose Stalin and thus East Germany was ceded to the Soviets.

The Marshall plan was an attempt to stop the bleeding as it were and keep West Germany from falling. NATO was the icing on the cake which pitted the rest of Europe and America against the Soviets.

I think the White House site has the video. Check that.

Dubya did good..especially since the "interruption" was some leftist parliament members holding up a sign that said "Bush/Schroder Stop Your War".

Dubya was one cool customer in this situation.

Hopefully we will get some Russian pictures tonight.

And exactly HOW was the Marshall Plan the cause of East Germany being communist for 50 years? You owe us an explanation.

Just checked the C-span site, they're going to repeat the speech at 10:00 est. I certainly do wish they'd make up their minds, it's so hard to find out when they're going to do anything because they keep changing the schedule.

I'm hoping for some really great pictures when President Bush goes to St. Petersburg. I saw a travelog of the White Nights once and it was incredibly beautiful.
