USO Canteen FReeper Style

Honors our Disabled American Veterans

The odds were, this is the last day of your life, but you still fought for your country.

You believe in freedom of speech and freedom of religion and you still believe that your kids should have health and happiness in their education.

Think of what these men endured to keep our good way of life so the future will be safe for all your children.

All over America tonight Disabled American Veterans will go to bed without adequate health care for themselves and their families.

At the end of the Revolutionary War, George Washington asked Americans to remember that his soldiers purchased freedom at "the price of their blood." Nothing, he added, could be more painful "than to behold those, who have shed their blood and lost their limbs in the service of the country…compelled to beg their bread from door to door."

Unfortunately, some veterans were forced to beg on the streets after losing arms, legs or sight in the American Revolution! And, while today's VA provides better service and care than veterans get anywhere else in the world, this has not always been the case. There have been other moments in our nation's history when disabled veterans ranked low on the public policy agenda.

Being wounded as a result of defending America's Freedom means far more than sacrificing mere blood and bone. Combat is not a movie or T.V. program where the characters get up at the end and walk off the stage. Injuries received in battle last a life time. Serious injuries that seemed to heal in a young man, tend to return with a vengeance as the man ages.

They fought the good fight and they sacrificed for the greatest Nation the World has ever known.

They fought for our FREEDOM

We prayed to God for their safety.
They all left their loved ones,
And their lives that they had known.
They departed to an unfamiliar land.
Risking their lives and making so many sacrifices.
Being away from family and friends,
Giving up what most can't even comprehend.

They protected our rights, our freedom, and the rights of others, So that we could have and enjoy freedom in our land.

Please help to protect the rights of our Veterans.

You can contact your local VFW Post, The American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Vietnam Veterans Of America, or Veterans Of The Vietnam War.

We owe these men and women a debt that we can never truly repay!

Our Disabled American Veterans stood up for us, under the absolute worst conditions, and they paid a tremendous price.

The Purple Heart is given to all American Military Personnel wounded or killed while in defense of this great Nation. The medal displayed here, the Purple Heart more than anything else illustrates the terribly high price of our freedom.

Billie has a wonderful Link Thread, Please click to go to it.

The great intangible of America's wars beyond logistics, beyond strategy, beyond wonder weapons and Generals, is the spiritual force of its fighting men and women - and that is the force that the USO so serves.

Thank you from all those that frequent the FReeper Canteen to Jim Robinson, Founder of FRee Republic and Navy Veteran.

Disabled Veterans React to September 11,2001

Within hours of the cowardly attacks, a Disabled American Veterans Transportation Network van delivered 250 pints of much-needed blood from the Department of Veterans Affairs medical center in Orlando, Fla., to Patrick Air Force Base to be flown to New York.

And as soon as it was feasible, the DAV placed two of its fleet of Mobile Service Offices near the ruins of the World Trade Center and the crash site at the Pentagon to assist veterans and their families recover from the tragedies of Sept. 11.

DAV National Service Officers have been providing disaster relief assistance to eligible veterans and their families and survivors throughout the crisis. These include the widow of the pilot of the ill-fated airliner that crashed into the Pentagon, as well as the families of those brave American soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines killed or injured at the Pentagon.

My uncle is a past DAV commander. He lost a lung during WWII as a sailor serving in the Pacific. He was shot during a landing on some hell hole of an island....he was on a landing craft of some kind.

My late Dad was shot, only grazed though, at Omaha Beach...what a miracle for him. He always volunteered at the VA hospital until he lost his vision in the 1980s.

Our D.A.R. Chapter continues to assist Vets at the VA hospital nearby,in many ways.

One way that any of you all can help is to take toiletries, little gifts and magazines to the Va Hospitals....it helps the the Vets and it makes you feel real good to be able to help those who served our Great nation!!!

The sacrifices made by our Disabled American Veterans was never something they signed up for. The wounds and maiming were a result of protecting this great country and all it stands for.

We can NEVER express enough gratitude to these heroes for the injuries inflicted upon them.

The best that I can ever do personally is to always remember their sacrifice, always be grateful with a thank you and finally, offer up a SALUTE. As we were instructed in boot camp, the highest honor a sailor could render the colors was a salute under arms.

I am not carrying a weapon, under which to salute, but in my heart, the SALUTE is genuine.

Thank You, Disabled Veterans of America.

Thank you Snow Bunny for once again honoring our Disabled American Veterans.

Sadly, the thread was cut short on Wed, but the sentiment is still alive.

Salute to Snow Bunny - a USO Canteen FReeper Vietnam Vet.
