Pim Fortuyn, murdered Dutch politician, on Israel
Likud Netherlands ^ | May 16 2002

Posted on 05/16/2002 10:03:24 AM PDT by knighthawk

Exempt from an interview with Pim Fortuyn, Joods Journaal (Jewish Journal)

He once said the modern world be not "without Arafat", now he says with his eyes wide open: "The situation changed essentialy, Arafat has showed his real self. He has proven to be a disaster, the peaceproces has landed in a terrible crisis because of him."

"I was present with the solidaritymeeting, the remembrance of the explosion in the pizzeria Sbarro in Jerusalem, held in the Amsterdam Rai. I was the only politician present there."

If the people of Israel stand with their back against the wall and you are minister-president of the Netherlands, what will you do?
"Next to arms and money I will send Dutch troops if needed to defend Israel."

How do you see the situation?
"I think that eventualy it will be Netanyahu that will succesfully negociate peace with the Palestinians."

Sharon is still president?
"Absolutely. But look: at the moment the military solution begins to lose it's charmes, Netanyahu will get another chance. Netanyahu was being portaid by the wold's public opinion as extreme right. One can see that in the way Sharon acts, Netanyahu is a more realistic option than the first time."

Netanyahu is demonized, being demonized by what calls itself 'left'. (In a flash Fortuyns eyes lit up.) Netanyahu positions himself on the right of Sharon?
"Yes, but he is more than a politician than Sharon. Netanyahu will try to use more political and diplomic means than military ones. On the last one the diplomacy is aimed, the use of violence is the focus. At a certain moment it will become evident a spiral of violence cannot be stopped and than you eventualy one will have to sort to political solutions. When that moment arrvies, Netanyahu may seem to be a very likely candidate."

Do you believe in 'the agression' of Israel?
"There is a big difference between the two parties, that is very striking. I always say: there is no Israeli that walks towards the other side and blows himself up."

The strange thing is that a day after an attack there is no understanding in the world that Israel counters?
"Well, that is a question of public relation. That was also the case with the man and his twelve year old son, that was killed in a shooting. My first reaction was: How does a father and his twelve year old on wind up in the range of a shooting? Are you nuts? A good father takes care of his child and that it doesn't get in such a dangerous situation!"

Manipulation by the journalists?
"You don't have to think I would fall for such a thing, I see right through it. I was quoted wrongly myself for twelve years and being a victim of this kind of manipulation. Photographers also do it, they create impressions that the reality does not show. It is also a case of lazyness: they put a microphone under some ones nose and stick to that. Then I aks myself: when you people start to investigate again and confront politicians again?"

"I have never trusted Arafat ofcourse. But he had to be given a chance that he wrecked by now. Yet it would be nice to specualte what it would have been if Camp David under the leadership of Clinton would have succeed. But unfortunatly: Arafat slided down.
Now, after the second intifada, the situation is completly different again.
After Oslo we could have thought that Arafat spoke for the majority of the Palestinian people. That was also Clinton's hops. That I even told Peres. I said to him: I can understand what you are thinking, I myself have thought like that, but after the second intifada one can no longer say it.
The cards have been divided. To return to the situation of how it once was is pointless."

How did Peres react to it?
"Well, he reacted a little shocked. We met eachother before, when I was still a PvdA-member. He has got a phenominal memory and remembered that conversation. He asked me to explain what I was doing now; he is a pure Labourparty man and had a hard time dealing with it. But we had a great converstaion. He certainly is an intelligent man and made a big impression. His compassion is real, Den Uyl (old Dutch minister-president). That Peres was able to manifest himself in Amsterdam that way, with him being 78 years old. I must say I admire that. But his vision on 'Oslo' is outdated. The main problem is that the violence between the Palestinians and the Israelis is a downward spiral of hate."

There is being preached anti-Semitism. The connection to the Holocaust is unfortunitly evident?
"Yes, I did warn of that. But still we intellectials need to see the gradual difference: it is different when suicide bombers commit their actions or when there are gaschambers being constructed to do massmurder. What I ment to say, is that the fear that people have to live with that I understand so well, also in America since September 11 last year. In my speeches I pointed out what this means: look at Israel, there people live for more than half a century in such fear.
Whatever, I think that there is a lot of underlying anti-Semitism in the concience of people in the Netherlands."

Also in the Kok cabinet?
"Yes. It is everywhere. The roots of it are persitant, feuled by centuries of hate against Jews based on a faked evangelium that blames the Jews of Godsmurder."

The more I read of Pim Fortuyn's positions, the more I'm left shaking my head in puzzlement- they seem to be perfectly common-sense postions to me, and reaction from his opponents looks more & more extreme.

Thanks for ping. I hope this honest politician's thoughts continue to change the way the Dutch think -- and vote.

Knighthawk, Bad news here.

According to the article in The Scotsman, Fortuyn wrote a column in 1999 excusing pedophilia (one of the worst crimes IMHO).

I had previously written on another thread that while I was concerned that Fortuyn would have pushed a homosexual agenda after taking office in a coalition government, such tendencies could have been neutralized by his coalition partners the Christian Democrats. However, pedophilia is something else again.

While I am pleased that Fortuyn courageously opposed Islamofascism, advocated free-market principles and stood up for Israel, his stand on "man-boy love" makes him (posthumously) unacceptable to me as a politican who should be trusted with public office.

Sorry.

Listen, if it was true, the left here in the Netherlands would have used this one to demonize him even more. What kind of stuff would make more a demon out of him than this. But the lefties/media never mentioned anything remote.

If one thing the Fortuyn-affair could have told people:

NEVER BELIEVE WHAT THE MEDIA TELLS YOU, CHECK IT OUT FOR YOURSELF FIRST!!!

From your link: Also it's time to say to the Palestinians to do something useful on their land with the millions of aid they recieve. Instead of tunneling the money to Swiss bank-accounts from corrupt PA elitist, they need to invest it in a state. Justice, democracy and the economy. The situation was for the Jews not much different back in 1948.

All this makes his assassination even more sad, but you commented that Fortuyn's last book sold out 10,000 copies on the first day of sale a few days ago. He's dead, but his words have been given even greater emphasis.

I agree with you there. I just surfed over to the Elsevier web site and entered "Fortuyn" into the search box but got 0 hits (?). Eventually, I am sure, the report will be either confirmed or disproven. If I could edit my previous post, therefore, I would like to insert the words "IF PROVEN".

Wow. He seemed to have a very clear understanding of the issues surrounding the Israel/Palestine issue. I realized that Arafat's chances are past.

I am proud to have voted for Pim Fortuyn!

Looks like it helped! As I understand the results, the party still got quite a number of seats. It will be able to influence the life of the country.

Congratulations on this victory! It is sad, of course, that it comes at a great cost. It would be bigger, too, if Fortuyn were still with us.

A course Dutch. Let's do part 2.

Ik moet kotsen als ik naar de linkse media kijk, de rode omroep doet er alles aan om de mensen te overtuigen dat Lijst Pim Fortuyn het slecht gaat doen in de regering.

The leftist media makes me barf when I watch it, the red network does everything to convince people that the List Pim Fortuyn is going to it badly in the government.

I did not agree with everything he wanted to do, but his stand on Israel is also mine and he had the lone courage in The Hague (where the government is) to say it out loud.
