At least 17 people are reported to have been killed after Muslim militants attacked an army camp near Jammu, in Indian-administered Kashmir.
The attack coincided with a visit to Delhi of US Assistant Secretary of State Christina Rocca, which is aimed at cooling tensions between India and Pakistan over Kashmir.
Muslim feelings over Kashmir run high
Subhash Raina, a senior superintendent of police, told the Associated Press news agency that three militants wearing army uniforms got off a bus outside the army camp at Kaluchak, 10 kilometres (six miles) south of Jammu.
They opened fire on soldiers, who fired back, and seven passengers getting off the bus were killed in the cross fire, Mr Raina said.
The militants then entered the residential quarters of the army camp and shot dead four soldiers, three of their wives and three children, he added.
Reports said explosions could be heard from inside the camp and police and commandos were helping to track down the militants.

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Rebels clad in fatigues killed 32 people, including civilians, in a raid on an army camp and a public transport bus in India's revolt-torn Kashmir on Tuesday, the army said.
"All three militants have been killed. There are a total 32 dead and 57 wounded, including children and women," an army spokesman in New Delhi told Reuters, adding the fighting had finished after about four hours.
The attack, the bloodiest since 38 people died in a raid on the Jammu and Kashmir state assembly in October, came as U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs Christina Rocca visited New Delhi to help ease tensions between India and Pakistan over
