India, U.S. expanding bilateral defence cooperation

Washington May 10. Cooperation between India and the United States in defence and security has been one of the "fastest'' sectors in the overall bilateral relationship with the width and depth expected to expand significantly in the near future, diplomats and analysts say.

And one of the significant aspects of this Republican administration has been that it is willing to look at India beyond a South Asia context in the larger canvas of defence and security issues and relationship. A multi-tier structure of defence cooperation has been put in place and one that encompasses not merely training exercises but also specific groups on the two sides dealing with technical and technology issues, including transfer of technology.

There are six different levels within the bilateral defence cooperation: between the Defence Minister of India and the U.S. Defence Secretary; the defence policy group; the military coordination group; the executive steering groups; the security cooperation group which deals with technological aspects; and the joint technical group.

What is being pointed out is the willingness of the United States to look at India beyond its own Pacific Command in Hawaii; and in the ways the Pentagon has been receiving the civilian and military brass from India. "It is really unprecedented'', remarked a top Indian diplomat here. The bilateral defence cooperation has merited the close attention of the administration starting with the U.S. President, George W. Bush, and including the Defence Secretary, the Secretary of State and the National Security Advisor.

One of the emphasis of this Republican administration has been to look at India within common strategic objectives in the Indian Ocean area. For instance, this October the United States and India will hold the Malabar series of naval exercises in the Indian Ocean or the Arabian Sea and for the first time a Cruiser Destroyer Group of three or four ships and maritime reconnaissance aircraft will participate.

India and the United States are also scheduled to have joint exercises — of special forces — in Agra and later this year at Alaska. A critical component of the expanding bilateral defence cooperation has been in the realm of procurement, the latest agreement being on the Firefinding Radar, or the ANTPQ 37 which was finalised during the meeting of the Security Cooperation Group. One of the things stressed here is that while every single item under Foreign Military Sales has to be notified to Congress, every effort is being taken to simplify the process. More importantly, in the context of the newly emerging relationship, there is no intention either in the administration or Congress to stop sales to India. "There is no intent to stop but the procedural time frame will have to be kept in mind'', remarked a senior diplomat.

New Delhi, May 11. (UNI): India and the United States today did the preliminary work for the joint exercises to be conducted by the forces of the two countries at Agra from Monday.

Official sources said the exercises will involve an Indian para- brigade, IAF aircraft, special forces from the U S and C-130 aircraft.

The soldiers from US, who will participate in the exercises, have already arrived in India.

The groundwork for the first of a series of drills to achieve cohesion was done by the Indo-U.S. intra-army Executive Steering Group (ESG), which met for the first time in five years in Febru ary this year.

ESGs for all the three services were formed last year and have met once to execute the political leadership's' desire to achieve inter-operability between the armed forces of the two countries.

The joint exercises are being conducted to enable the armed forces to carry out joint patrolling of Malacca Straits and peace-keeping operations in the future. The ESGs have also dis cussed closer ties in the areas of counter-terrorism, intel ligence and disaster management.

India, Russia, and NATO should forge a strong alliance to halt Islamic imperialism. China may also be willing to join the alliance.

Russia and China need to stop pointing their nuclear weaponry in the US' direction before that happens. IMHO the US alliance with India is aimed at containing China. It is in its beginning stages and depending on Chinese moves in the future it will most likely strengthen.

I agree, while also being important in the event the Russians have a change of heart or are revealed as deceptive. I think with the common enemy of terrorists, Pakistan may also be brought into such an arrangement with the improvemnt of relations between India and Pakistan as an added benefit.

It is so refreshing to see an administration with its act together after 8 years of black comedy.

India faces hostility from China and from the Islamic theocracies. An alliance with the U.S. would be useful in containing both.

If India, Russia, and the NATO nations forge a strong military, political, and economic alliance, so powerful that China could not hope to overcome it, China will have no alternative but to join the alliance.

This will leave the Islamic world isolated and with no alternative but to modernize and secularize.

The most important thing of all is for the U.S. to remain overwhelmingly powerful. The only threat to this is decadence, and its primary manifestation in Liberalism.

India and Russia I can see, they are under attack by jihad as we are. NATO/Europe is being overun with muslims and is in the grip of anti-semitism and I think the EU will fall in line with the Islamofascists. Red China is our enemy, they will support the Sand Nazis also, IMHO.

The imperialistic ambitions of both China and Islam are frustrated by the U.S., Russia, and India. This leads naturally to two alliances: China/Islam and NATO/Russia/India.

The Chinese and the Muslims have little else in common to forge an alliance and, in fact, have conflicting ambitions. The American Dream, of universal peace, prosperity, and the pursuit of happiness, is the mutual ambition of the U.S., Russia, and India.

If the U.S., Russia, and India maintain their overwhelming advantages and succeed in containing China and Islam, which they can do if they will do it, China can be forced to satisfy her amibitions in cooperation with, rather than in opposition to, the U.S., Russia, and India and to abandon any alliance with Islam.

Europe is decadent. Its future depends on whether or not the Europeans can manage to prevent Muslims from overwhelming them and taking over the continent--and the real question is whether or not they have the will, energy, and clarity to protect themselves or whether they are so decadent that they can't even manage to care.

"Liberal"/Democrat America is also decadent.

However the American Heartland is vibrant, energetic, strong, and still in ascendancy. This is where the hope of the world lies.

If "Liberal"/Democrat forces prevail in the U.S., both North America and Europe will be overwhelmed by decadence, Islam, and ultimately China. Western Civilization will fall. China will take over Asiatic Russia. Islam will overwhelm India. The Islamic Holocaust will dwarf the Nazi Holocaust. What's left of the devastated Western World will be face the horrors of a war between Islam and China, which China will win.

If the vitality of the American Heartland prevails, the power of the United States will increase, and American influence will continue to dominate the world. Russia and India will naturally fall into alliance with NATO and ultimately China will see the wisdom of doing the same thing. The Islamic world will be left with no choice but to secularize, modernize, and find accomodation with the rest of the world. All of this can lead to world-wide prosperity and peace--The American Dream.

The American Dream is alive and well in the American Heartland--Bush Country. The U.S. offers it to the world.

The strength and vitality of the Heartland are powerful enough to lead the world to peace and prosperity; the fate of the world depends on it. I think that this is what will happen.

Pray that it will.

Yes, I agree. Will the right prevail? Time will tell I guess.

This has happened before in history, great civilizations have fallen before to barbarians because of their decadence and the US is well on the way. The left has weakened this country greatly and continues to do so on a daily basis. They have organized an anti-war movement to try to stop us from defending ourselves from the worldwide jihad. Of course there was a massive anti-war movement during the Vietnam war but in that case US territory was not under direct attack. We are under direct attack in this case, civilains are even the targets! And yet these clueless, suicidal leftists want us to surrender to the islamic fascists! I also agree that the Islamic Holocast would dwarf the nazi one because the islamic killers think they are doing the will of their bloodthristy god, allah. In the meantime our government plays footsie with terrorists like Arafat and the Saudi princes who are the bankrollers of this terrorist war. We can even get proper guards at airports because of PC politics, and our President wants to further flood America with a never ending river of immigrants from Mexico which will further weaken and fragment America, IMHO. The future doesn't look too bright to me, I agree we had better get on our knees and pray to God for mercy because no country in the history of mankind was given more blessings than the United States of America and we in large part have turned our backs on God and taken His blessings for granted as if we somehow deserve them, no, as if we have a right to them! The rot has set in, in the heartland as well and I fear it is too late to reverse the inevitable decline and fall of the American experiment. Maybe I am too pessimistic, I hope you are right and thanks for that interesting reply.

I agree with everything you said, absolutely and completely, down to "IMHO". After that, I don't.

I think America's strength is in the Heartland, and I think Americans are waking up--not as fast as one would wish--but fast.

If this situation awakens Americans from the nightmare of Liberalism/decadence, some good can come of it.

I think the American Dream will prevail. But Liberalism must be defeated resoundingly; this is a sine qua non.

This is one reason I post on Free Republic, and no doubt why many of us do--in the hope that our words may help win the American culture war--a war that could prove to be the most decisive in the history of the world--and that's not hyperbole!

Yes liberalism must be defeated because if it prevails it will destroy this country and usher in a new Dark Age that would be hell on Earth.

You are right, for all her faults, what country would take the place of the USA?

This question may hold the key to the defeat of Liberalism and the salvation of the world.
