FBI MAN WAS DEEP THROAT
By Tom Kelly
Monday 6 May 2002
FORMER FBI agent Mark Felt is the man who brought down Richard Nixon in the Watergate scandal, it was claimed last night.
Felt, nicknamed Deep Throat, is said to have provided the tip-offs to Washington Post reporters Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward about the break-in at the Democrats' HQ 30 years ago.
Author Ronald Kessler names Felt even though the two newsmen vowed not to identify their source until he or she was dead.
White House aide John Dean, jailed for four months for his part in the affair, said earl-ier this week that he would name Deep Throat next month.
Kessler claims in his book The Bureau, The Secret History of the FBI, that the reporters, who wrote All The President's Men, "lifted almost verbatim" from FBI files.
Mr Woodward rec-ently visited the official at his California home, while the agent's wife told Mr Bernstein he was Deep Throat.

Incidentally, Culeman-Beckman's paper unearths a nifty Felt-related snippet from the White House tapes that Chatterbox didn't know about. As in the White House tapes excerpt Chatterbox previously cited, Felt is discussed as a probable leaker. This time, though, Nixon (who, among other things, will likely be remembered as America's last anti-Semitic president) expresses horror at discovering Felt to be Jewish. This conversation, dated Oct. 19, 1972, is even more Gothic than the last:
Nixon: Well, if they've got a leak down at the FBI, why the hell can't Gray tell us what the hell is left? You know what I mean?... Haldeman: We know what's left, and we know who leaked it. Nixon: Somebody in the FBI? Haldeman: Yes, sir. Mark Felt. You can't say anything about this because it will screw up our source and there's a real concern. Mitchell is the only one who knows about this and he feels strongly that we better not do anything because-- Nixon: Do anything? Never. Haldeman: If we move on him, he'll go out and unload everything. He knows everything that's to be known in the FBI. He has access to absolutely everything ... Nixon: What would you do with Felt? Haldeman: Well, I asked Dean ... Nixon: You know what I'd do with him, the bastard? Well that's all I want to hear about it. Haldeman: I think he wants to be in the top spot. Nixon: That's a hell of a way for him to get to the top. Haldeman: You can figure a lot of--maybe he thought--first of all, he has to figure that if you stay in as president there's a possibility or probability Gray will stay on. If McGovern comes in, then you know Gray's going to be out ... Nixon: Is he Catholic? Haldeman: (unintelligible) Jewish. President Nixon: Christ, put a Jew in there? Haldeman: Well, that could explain it too.
Update, 8/4/99: After much pestering online and by phone, Chatterbox has finally gotten The Atlantic to post on its Web site Jim Mann's watershed Deep Throat piece.] 14 posted on 5/3/02 9:12 PM Pacific by LarryLied

Until he and Woodward corroborate I'll still believe deepthroat was an invention to get dubious leads past editor Ben Bradlee.
Woodward's track record on sources sucks. Bill Casey's deathbed confession to him?

"Are they sure it wasn't Monica?.. - No defiantly not - it says Deep Throat!" With Monica, you might mean bent throat!

Until he and Woodward corroborate I'll still believe deepthroat was an invention to get dubious leads past editor Ben Bradlee. Until proven otherwise, I believe this is right as well. Over the years it has looked as Deep Throat never existed, but rather was useful in providing a way to slip stories into the ComPost, which did not bother Graham who was definately out to get Nixon. The only thing I can't figure out is why the story has not come out yet because nobody in that town can keep a secret.

the two newsmen vowed not to identify their source until he or she was dead. What happens if they die first? They should put something in writing in a safe deposit box and their wills should order their executors to make it public.

This stuff keeps getting brought up, to remind the citizens of the great Demon Nixon, and to dump on conservatives. A large part of those growing up these days don't know what century Nixon was President in.

Occam's Razor: if a player named "Who" could be on first, why not first name Deep, last name Throat, being the deep throat? Mr Deep Throat's on third! How hard is that, geez?!

I thought it was Cokie Roberts.

That is what I was going to say, Linda Lovelace, you beat me to it! hehehe
I never saw Deep Throat or The Devil and Mrs. Jones -- but we had friends who saw both movies. I only took notice of the movies because of all the uproar against them. I wonder if they are still available on video? Probably pretty TAME compared to today's TV Soap Operas. They are PORN! My Jr. High boyfriend, Kim Morrow's, son Joshua Morrow is Nick on YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS. We watched it ONCE just to see what Joshua looked like. He was wearing only briefs, nothing else, in a hot steamy love scene in a bed with a young blonde chick. NEVER watched that stuff again! I wonder if his family is embarrassed?!?!?!?? It was just soft porn!

Thanks for the transcript excerpt. It's illuminating. Nixon was such an anti-Semite. Hmmm, Felt. I had always thought it was going to be Haig. Well, I feel Dean will tell the truth on this one. His book will settle it for me.

bump!

If this is true, then Felt was just like a later FBI higher-up named Bob Hanssen; always talking out of school to the wrong people!

Someday there will be an explanation as to why presidents recorded their every conversation. Damn bizarre. Common sense would tell you that the actual conversations would be drab compared to the historical view. Nixon was a great international president, and a great friend of Israel. Almost went to war with Russia to save Israel. Henry Kissinger was a great Jewish Sec. of State. But the fact that Nixon bothered to get into petty anti-semitic conversations is troubling to me. Especially for a leader who took such an expansive and unpetty world view.
