Thousands march for immigrants' rights in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES - More than 5,000 people marched downtown to call for amnesty for illegal immigrants and freedom for foreign detainees.

May Day marchers held signs that read "Legalization Now" and chanted while marching to a steady drum beat. They held a sit-in in front of Gov. Gray Davis (news - web sites)' Los Angeles office before holding a candlelight vigil outside the downtown Federal Building.

Police Department officers stood at every corner, some in riot gear, and a police helicopter hovered overhead, but there were no reports of problems.

"This is the international day of workers, and we want to call attention to workers' rights," said Ricardo Moreno, spokesman for the Interfaith Coalition for Immigrant Rights. His group and the other 80 organizations that sponsored the May Day rally want U.S. President George W. Bush (news - web sites) to grant amnesty to all illegal workers.

"Most of these people are hard-working. They work in restaurants, clean houses and at car washes, and deserve to be treated fairly," Moreno said.

The groups also want the state to issue driver's licenses and identification cards to undocumented workers.

Davis, state Assemblyman Gil Cedillo, law enforcement representatives and immigrant rights advocates have been trying to craft a bill that would allow illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses.

The demonstration in Los Angeles was one of several May Day events in cities around the world.

"This march will serve as a testimony that immigrants not only work hard, but they can also unite and demand their rights as taxpayers," said Myron Payes, of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles.

Demonstrators protested the detention of hundreds of Arab and Muslim immigrants since the Sept. 11 attacks. They also denounced other forms of "immigrant bashing," such as impending rules that will force thousands of noncitizens to leave their jobs as airport security workers.

PING!!!!!

By reading this article, I'm more than convinced that these people are totally oblivious to the meaning & definition of "ILLEGAL".

Sometimes I just get this odd feeling, that once again, their demands will be answered.

I find it interesting how we never have such "immigrant rights" protests in Miami, despite being a high immigrant area. Could it be that most of the immigrants here work for a living and don't have time to protest? Could it be that Miami lacks a WHITE LIBERAL power structure to publicize and support such idiocy?

This whole ordeal is a complete mess. It seems no matter what we do to accomediate these people to a better life, It's never enough. I must add, that they are quite good at exploiting themselves.

"Most [Criminal aliens] are hard-working. They work in restaurants, clean houses and at car washes, and deserve to be treated fairly" .....

Absolutely.

So let's round the bastards up, handcuff them to the seats in a bus and/or in an airplane and give them all a FRee Ride home!

Now! Considering the Greatest Good for the Greatest Number!

[Of AMERICANS!]

What could be fairer than that?

"...call for amnesty for illegal immigrants and freedom for foreign detainees."

Interesting that they'd ally themselves with terrorists. Unless arabs are paying for this.

I sure hope that the Border Patrol had lots and lots of those pale green vans filled up to capacity from this event. Talk about a target-rich environment.

I've seen enough. It is time for our own march. I think that we should create a thread and work for our own march. What do you say? Do we have the guts to stop the insanity and to get out and be activists? This minority of people, many illegal aliens, is dictating our laws, and our politicians are paying attention to them. Being that our side outnumbers the other side at least 80-20, then we need to let them know in the form of marches.

It's time to tell out public officials that American citizen rights only pertain to American citizens, and that, other than the right of life and worship, aliens have no rights.

It's time to get the facts out in the open, tell the truth about what is happening, and get the public outraged the way they should be.

Are we going to stand by and do nothing while our country is given away, or are we going to fight for it. As patriots, we have to stand up for the rule of law, the Constitution, as well as for our fellow American Citizens. It's time to stop the madness, and we need to coordinate an effort with virtually every true Conservative group in order to get our message out in the open.

Are we willing to contact every anti-illegal immigration website, newsservice, as well as general Conservative papers, websites, politicians, etc., giving the facts about what is occuring, telling them to publish the truth in their papers, asking them to attend rallys with us, and telling their listeners (if radio shows) about the problem, as well as asking them to participate in rallies? Are we willing to contact EVERY congressman and tell them the truth. Are we willing to support and run candidates for U.S. congress in every house and senate district? It's time we be more proactive, and we have got to get our a coordinated effort.

Yeah, when these illegals are off work they stand around outside their humble apartment complex, getting drunk and yelling threats to my thriteen year old son riding his bike home from school. His new bike to replace his stolen bike.

My son has been called European, and informed that this is their land and he needs to go back to Europe. Yep, I'm real sympathetic to their plight. Makes me want to run to the nearest voting booth and place my vote for the current Rino.

Are they Americans? Are they legal? No!!!!!!! Do they deserve rights that other Americans have? No!!!!! Militarize our southern border, it's a good investment. During an economic slump, these people will be occupying jobs that decent taxpaying Americans could be working at. Maybe the liberal left and radical left will pay their way eh? Yeah, right.

I'm willing to help out. However, I haven't the funds, being that I'm a 25 year old guy. I think that we should all work towards this effort.
