When Danny’s grandmother visits the welfare office every month...“If our parents pay taxes, ..."

Difficult to pay taxes when you are on welfare, as Danny joins the "Among their demands" crowd.

One of my great-great grandmothers immigrated to the US from the Rhine valley region of Germany. She kept a journal that's been passed down through the family. The first sections were written in German. After about 9 months to a year, she switched to English.

Guess what? The government never provided "ESL classes". The local immigrant community taught the newcomers the language. I guess that isn't possible anymore since they can live here for years and never need to learn the language.

Sounds like translators could get expensive because "According to 1990 U.S. Census Data, at least 329 languages are spoken in the United States". Click here for an alphabetical list.

Kadrije Brahimaj, 45, of Staten Island immigrated to the United States five months ago. Despite some 20 years of experience as a veterinarian in her native Albania, Brahimaj said she is having a difficult time finding a job, partly because she is not fluent in English.
She is currently taking free English classes at the New York Urban League.

Ok....next problem

When Danny’s grandmother visits the welfare office every month, the 10th-grader from Bushwick often forgoes classes to translate. “If it wasn’t for me, my father would have had problems with doctors because he doesn’t speak English,” said Torres, who was born in Puerto Rico. “If our parents pay taxes, we should have translators so bad things don’t occur.”

Stupid kid ---people who sit around in welfare offices aren't paying taxes.

When my mothers side of the family emmigrated to this country in the late 1800's they didn't speak a single word of english. Somehow they managed to produce 13 (yes, that's 13) children, learn to read, write and speak english, educate their children of which some went off to war in WWI & II to fight for this country - all without a translater or welfare. Imagine that, busting your a$$ and being appreciative of the country that takes you in.

There's the door, don't let it hit you on the way out.
