Bethlehem monks make defiant stand in Nativity siege

Brother Mark Boyle staggers in, carrying a cardboard box full of Israeli rockets.

Brother Mark, a softly spoken 60-year-old monk from near Newcastle upon Tyne, came to Bethlehem to teach English at a Vatican-funded university. That was until the Israeli missiles slammed into the university buildings, blowing great holes in the wall and tearing apart classrooms.

Now, like everyone in the town, Brother Mark is under a curfew imposed by the Israeli army. Apart from a couple of three-hour respites to go shopping, he has not been allowed out for two weeks. Twelve monks live in the university; three Britons, eight Americans and a Palestinian. From the window of their living room, you can see the besieged Church of the Nativity, said to be the site of Jesus Christ's birthplace.

Brother Mark watched in horror on Tuesday night as heavy gunfire broke out around the church, with Israeli soldiers firing from all sides. One chapel caught fire briefly. The Palestinians accused the Israelis of trying to storm the church.

Inside, 240 Palestinian gunmen fleeing the Israelis have claimed sanctuary. The situation has developed into something out of the Middle Ages – or a Graham Greene novel. For while the adversaries face off at one of the holiest sites in the Christian world, some 30 monks have stepped between them. The monks, most of them Franciscan, are insisting that they will remain with the gunmen, to prevent a "bloodbath". At a meeting, they all agreed they would stay "to the end".

From his window, Brother Mark has seen the gunfights. He has watched, bemused, as the Israelis raised a loudspeaker on a crane and played a collection of sounds – dogs barking, women screaming – designed to terrify those inside. They responded by ringing the bells.

As we watch, a surveillance balloon floats above the church, and the sound of machine-gun fire cracks over the town.

"I think it would be devastating for Christians if the Church of the Nativity was assaulted, or broken into," Brother Mark said.

He and his colleagues at Bethlehem University are making their quiet stand. Western diplomats have offered to evacuate them. "What sort of Christian witnesses would we be if we left?" asks Brother Mark. The monks are still celebrating Mass daily. Father Peter DuBrule risks his life by breaking the curfew every day, to come to the university and say Mass in the town where Christ was born.

"I think it would be devastating for Christians if the Church of the Nativity was assaulted, or broken into," Brother Mark said.

But it was broken into -- by Palestinian "gunmen" (that is, terrorists). Or doesn't that count, since it wasn't done by Jews?

It doesn't count. They were seeking refugee. The monks have no choice but to do what they are doing.

No, no...they were simply seeking "sanctuary" from the horrid, bloodthirsty Jews < /sarcasm >

I am still wondering why they didn't go into the mosque right across the street, I don't think the IDF would go into a Muslim religious site either...so WHY the Church of the Nativity ?? Are they seeking to establish a "permanent Muslim occupation" of this Christian site -- maybe so they can bulldoze it like they did the Tomb of Joseph, then build a new "inviolate" mosque ?

Did the monks insist they leave their weapons outside

What kind of Christian witness would they be if they allowed criminals to be arrested? What kind of Christian witness would they be if they stopped suicide bombings? I don't get it.

You can't shoot your way into a church and then claim "sanctuary"...it doesn't work that way. Some of the monks are Palestinian or Arab, and are sympathetic. Two monks who managed to get out claimed they were held against their will, but would not say more for fear of the others still inside. The Palestinians are now baiting the IDF by forcing innocent "guests" to stand just outside the courtyard door, perhaps hoping they will be shot ??

In other words plenty of Jew killing Islamic chickens**ts are exploiting Christian mercies.

A group of Jewish children were hidden from the Nazis by Nuns in Vichy France. They were breaking the law. Those with real faith do not let temporal disputes change their faith.

First of all there are a lot of people, myself included, who do not equate Jewish children fleeing Adolph Hitler's SS with armed Palestinian gunmen who barge into a church and forcably "occupy" it with machine guns.

And secondly, there is nothing "unchristian" about allowing criminals to be arrested. Jesus could have freed many criminals when he was in jail himself being persecuted by the Romans. He did not do it. Nor did he keep the theif on the cross [next to him] from being punished for his sins.

Dirty Jews! Especially, after the way good Christians like Pope Pius XII looked after them during the Holocaust...as a current comparison in conduct, just compare how a fine Christian nation like France is protecting their synagogues and temples from the Muslim horde! < /sarcasm>

I seriously doubt the IDF would blow up a mosque, they have been very restrained when it comes to treatment of Muslim holy sites. And can you imagine how the already anti-Israel world press would have handled that type of story? Of course, there was a report on a large bomb being found in that self-same mosque today...now how did THAT get there ??

It might be an archaeological tragedy and a human tragedy, but most Christians are aware that the Church is not the physical plant and the physical plant is not the Church. Christianity itself only gains strength from adversity.

Jesus also overturned the tables of the money-changers in the Jewish temple...he was outraged by the outright show of disrespect and exploitation in His Father's house.

“During the ten years of Nazi terror, when our people went through the horrors of martyrdom, the Pope raised his voice to condemn the persecutors and commiserate with the victims.”

So why don't the monks:

a)Leave the church for a day and let IDF get them out? b)At least come out and make a statement that they gunmen are not wanted and that they have requested for the gunmen to leave but they are not complying? Why not?

I have no idea. I would turn them over if I could or get out myself. But then I'm not a Christian monk. People of deep faith live in another world than the one I inhabit.
