SOME days, Nina Doherty worries that the Internal Revenue Service is going to seize her house. She owes them over $100,000 because of the alternative minimum tax, known as the AMT.
"The IRS has sent me a letter more than once saying that they may put a lien on my house so that's certainly a possibility," Doherty said.

Almost like giving Enron a rebate for taxes not paid over the last several years.
The AMT is a socialist dream tax. One of the worst things clinton did was to raise it another 2% as part of the largest tax increase in history.
The AMT has always been advertised as a "soak the rich" tax. The media love it, which may explain why Bush hasn't tried to touch it. That's too bad, because as sad experience often shows, what "the rich" really means when it comes down to the nitty-gritty is anyone who tries to work for a living, sells a house or a business, or otherwise tries to support himself and his family.
You know it has to be a bad tax when the IRS wants it repealed.
A recent issue of Forbes contains an excellent article on the AMT. Some of the stories are truly astounding -- such as the case of the family that had "too many" children. It is no wonder that the AMT creates confusion and anger.

Our Masters in Washington have such tender feelings for the money they squeeze from the taxpayer. It's touching how much they care. [I pause, wiping a tear from my eye.]
