SOME days, Nina Doherty worries that the Internal Revenue Service is going to seize her house. She owes them over $100,000 because of the alternative minimum tax, known as the AMT.

"The IRS has sent me a letter more than once saying that they may put a lien on my house so that's certainly a possibility," Doherty said.

If you think these taxes are bad, take a look at the New Tax form (1040-K-9) that must be filed for every Dog that you own.

OFFICIAL DOG TAX FORM

Tumble - are you as far out west as Chesterfield?

Even the IRS wants the AMT repealed. The agency's National Taxpayer Advocate said in a report to Congress that the AMT "creates taxpayer confusion and anger because it catches taxpayers unaware."

Congress has introduced several bills to fix or repeal the AMT, but the legislation is going nowhere because, some say, it would simply cost the government too much

But wait! I thought IRS was the evil one in the government Are we finally seeing the truth?

If she was in the San Jose/San Fran area, bet she voted for AlGore. I fail to feel sorry for her until it's determined she did NOT vote for AlGore or Nader.

"Some rich person out there isn't paying his fair share and so they stick this fix in."

Almost like giving Enron a rebate for taxes not paid over the last several years.

Unfortunately Bush did not do anything about the AMT in his tax-cut bill, although there were some complaints at the time. And there have been no signs that it is anywhere on his agenda. His next target, if he is ever in a position to cut taxes again, is business taxes.

The AMT is a socialist dream tax. One of the worst things clinton did was to raise it another 2% as part of the largest tax increase in history.

The AMT has always been advertised as a "soak the rich" tax. The media love it, which may explain why Bush hasn't tried to touch it. That's too bad, because as sad experience often shows, what "the rich" really means when it comes down to the nitty-gritty is anyone who tries to work for a living, sells a house or a business, or otherwise tries to support himself and his family.

You know it has to be a bad tax when the IRS wants it repealed.

A recent issue of Forbes contains an excellent article on the AMT. Some of the stories are truly astounding -- such as the case of the family that had "too many" children. It is no wonder that the AMT creates confusion and anger.

Congress has introduced several bills to fix or repeal the AMT, but the legislation is going nowhere because, some say, it would simply cost the government too much. Over the next decade, the AMT is expected to rake in more than a half a trillion dollars for the U.S. Treasury.

Our Masters in Washington have such tender feelings for the money they squeeze from the taxpayer. It's touching how much they care. [I pause, wiping a tear from my eye.]
