ERIE -- An underground eco-terrorism group has apparently claimed responsibility for torching a construction crane and spiking trees to prevent a highway project in Erie.
In a statement faxed to Erie media yesterday, the Earth Liberation Front -- an environmental group suspected in the 1998 arson attacks at a Vail, Colo., ski resort -- claimed responsibility for setting fire to the crane March 24.
The group also claimed it had driven metal or ceramic spikes into trees, which can injure or kill tree-cutting crews.
"Workers should exercise extreme caution if attempting to kill these trees. They can now fight back," the statement said.
State officials and the FBI said they were looking into the vandalism and possible involvement by the group.
"We haven't been able to determine one way or the other," said Bob Rudge, agent in charge of the FBI office in Erie, adding that the damage and tactics match those used by the Earth Liberation Front in other areas.
The $31 million highway project is part of a plan to create a new highway running along the southern shore of Lake Erie and would connect with Interstate 90. Workers are currently working on a bridge over the Wintergreen Gorge, east of the city, near Harborcreek.
State highway officials said the fire would not delay construction of the bridge, which is expected to start in two weeks.
The Earth Liberation Front and another group, the Animal Liberation Front, have claimed responsibility for more than 600 attacks since 1996 and is the largest and most active U.S.-based terrorist group, according to the FBI's top domestic terrorism officer.
If you go to a Burger King, please don't buy their new PETA Peat moss non burger. Any purchase of that foul creation will fund PETA, which in turn funds ALF/ELF. (Link to MurderKing.com)
Gee they don't sound too yummy do they ..
Katie Fedor, a spokeswoman for the Animal Liberation Front, says the two groups collaborated twice last summerfirst setting fire to a U.S. Department of Agriculture building in Olympia, Wash., and later releasing 300 mink from a private biomedical research company.
Gary R. Perlstein, chairman of the Justice Department at Portland State University and author of Perspectives of Terrorism, is that many of these groups are comprised of the same people working both above and below the system to accomplish their goals.
A lot of times these groups are splinter groups of mainstream environmental groups, so they change the name, and it seems like an unknown group. It was a similar technique in the Olympics when the Palestinians attacked the Israeli athletesthe groups name was just that name for that mission.
Which makes it difficult for authorities to track, or even count, says Perlstein.
We have no idea and the FBI has no idea. We can say there are over 7,000 environmental groups out there, with close to $100 million in donations, but how many of them are radical elements we dont know.
In some ways ELF, ALF, Earth first!, PETA, BlackBloc, & Greenpeace are a greater danger to the constitution loving American then are the radical islamists.
IMO
So if you want to curtail eco violence terrorism by the ALF/ELF terrorist, don't buy the PETA MOSS Burger at BK!

"In light of the events on September 11, my country has told me that I should not cooperate with terrorists. I therefore am refusing to cooperate with members of Congress who are some of the most extreme terrorists in history. Currently they are responsible for allowing the slaughter of now over an estimated 1,500 Afghanistan civilians. They are responsible for the Sept. 11 attacks due to horrendous U.S. foreign policies of imperialism and they are responsible for the current ongoing genocide against the innocent people of Afghanistan. This alleged war on terrorism has largely been conducted to allow the U.S. to attempt to oust the Taliban, and put in place a new puppet regime in Afghanistan who would allow the U.S. to build their much sought after pipeline from the Turkmenistan oil reserves through southern Afghanistan, Pakistan, and to the Gulf. These sort of practices, mixed in with domestic policies of racism, classism, and further imperialism at the expense of life demonstrate the truly terrorist reality of the U.S. Congress and Government. I could not live with myself if I cooperated with that injustice." (Craig Rosebraugh, in a statement distributed by the North American ALF press office following a subpoena for him to testify before a Congressional subcommittee on ecoterrorism, Nov. 1, 2001.)

Now, when watching news films from Israel is seems that there isnt a tree within a thousand miles. Where are these trees being planted, or is a giant scam being run?
This is not a joke and I am not trying to be a smart ass. I am really looking for an answer.
Maybe not such a bad idea. Pass laws requiring a diversion of funds from enviromental purposes to replace and repair all property damaged by ecoterrorists, maybe at 10 to 1 ratio. Require the selling of National Forrest trees to pay high costs of safely removing spiked trees, at 10 to 1 ratio. Remove all protection for any species that an act of enviroterrorism was intended to assist. That just might put them in a box, and encourage their terrorist frontmen to drop a dime on the perps, if they really "care" about the enviroment rather than promoting communism.

Federal investigators say they are finally closer to solving the crimes. Recently, a seventeen-year-old student reportedly admitted setting a series of fires in the state of New York. He was charged in connection with acts of damage believed to be carried out by the Earth Liberation Front. The student is the son of a New York City police officer. He reportedly made the admission during a secret court hearing. As part of a deal, the student agreed to cooperate with officials investigating the Earth Liberation Front. He could face up to twenty years in prison.
This is the first time that a member of the group has admitted being responsible for environmental crimes linked to the Earth Liberation Front. Three other suspects in the property attacks were negotiating with federal officials.
Since Nineteen-Ninety-Six, members of the group have claimed to have damaged or burned hundreds of new homes, tree-cutting companies, federal offices and animal and plant research laboratories. They say their goal is to stop development and other activities they consider harmful to nature. They say their property attacks are aimed at industry and rich people who profit from the destruction of the natural environment.
The Earth Liberation Front says it will use any direct action necessary to carry out its goals. But it says it is opposed to harming animals or humans. Traditional environmental groups in the United States reject the groups methods.
The Earth Liberation Front includes environmental extremists who operate independently of each other. Federal investigators say their lack of structure has made them difficult to stop. And they say the group usually leaves very little evidence behind.
A few weeks ago, the group claimed responsibility for burning several new homes in Mount Sinai, New York. It has also claimed responsibility for destructive acts in Colorado, Arizona, Oregon and Wisconsin.
Considering that mink are voracious predators, one must take into account that this action probably did more than a little damage to local wildlife....
