Bush backs Saudi plan

PRESIDENT George W. Bush has urged Arab nations to approve a Saudi peace offer to Israel, and called on Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to let Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat join the Arab League summit in Beirut, where the initiative is to be considered. "The President believes it is time for Arab nations in the region to seize the moment, to create a better environment for peace to take root," White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said yesterday of the summit, which opens in the Lebanese capital today. Mr Bush welcomed the proposal by Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, Mr Fleischer said. "He thinks it would be very helpful in the search for peace in the Middle East."

The Saudi offer to Israel of "full normalisation" of relations with Arab nations depends on Israel withdrawing from the West Bank, Gaza and the Golan Heights and accepting a Palestinian state with its capital in Jerusalem.

Leaning on Israel to drop its confinement of Mr Arafat to his headquarters in Ramallah, Mr Fleischer said: "The President believes Prime Minister Sharon and the Israel Government should give serious consideration to allowing Yasser Arafat to attend."

US Secretary of State Colin Powell pressed the point in telephone conversations with Mr Sharon on the weekend, saying Mr Arafat should be permitted to go back to the West Bank after the Arab League meeting.

Israeli hardliners believe that if Mr Arafat attends the summit, he should not be allowed to return to the Palestinian areas -- a condition that is unacceptable to Mr Arafat.

"Is there any law to prevent me ... to come back to my homeland? This is my right," Mr Arafat told US television.

The Palestinian leader said he was doing his best to stop the violence. "I am making a 100 per cent effort ... but no one can get 100 per cent results except God."

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who says Israel's occupation of the West Bank and Gaza is illegal, urged Mr Sharon to let Mr Arafat attend the Arab summit.

But a Sharon adviser said Israel would not lift its ban on Mr Arafat until the Palestinian leader took decisive steps against Palestinian militants.

Meanwhile, Mr Sharon proposed a three-stage peace plan that would begin with a ceasefire, move on to a "long-range interim period" with a partial peace arrangement and then to negotiations for a permanent peace.

General Powell had a lengthy telephone conversation yesterday with Mr Arafat, in which he urged him to give "clear and unambiguous orders to Palestinian security forces to prevent further terror attacks", US spokesman Richard Boucher said.

General Powell called on Mr Arafat to break up Hezbollah, a militant group backed by Iran and Syria that has fought a cross-border war with Israel from its bases in Lebanon. The US lists Hezbollah as a terrorist group, a description many Arab states do not accept.

Mr Boucher said Israel "must create an environment that makes real success possible" for US mediator Anthony Zinni's efforts to rebuild a ceasefire.

If Bush is simply making nice with the Saudis until he attacks Iraq, that's pathetic. If he truly wants to push Israel to accept the Saudi "peace" plan, that's pathetic too.

Not to worry! Israel can not ever afford to accept the Saudi plan. They already have far too much invested in the occupied Palestinian land. The Israeli settlers who already live there and have built homes there WILL never leave. Everyone recognizes that the simplistic plan the Saudis present is a non starter.

I think Israel should call their bluff: invite every Arab head of state to meet with the Isreali government in a public, neutral location. Then watch them all back down out of fear of the crazies in their own countries. Saudi peace plan heads for the dustbin where it belongs.

Bush should either side with Israel or seek adoption into the House of Saud, which is a terrorist organization.

If any Jew is hiding behind Bush, he will call the nearest Muslim to kill that Jew.

I got a good idea. Israel should agree, but there has to some demands added:

Everytime Palestinians attack Israel (still), Israel is allowed to retaliate 'Palestine' big time, and the Arabs and UN are not allowed to protest.

Also Arab nations who still support the terror, will recieve some cruise-missiles on their government buildings, and like it.

The Arab nation will set up a fund to pay the vitims/family of Israeli people who are victim of terrorist attacks that occure after the peace-treaty. As in a few million dollar a victim.

Let's see if the Arabs still agree.

This is BS. Bush does not 'back' this plan. He backs the idea of a plan. He backs some amorphous concept of an idea of a possibilty of a vision of a peace deal which may someday eventually come to pass, maybe. That and the Tenet Plan and The Mitchell Plan. Something like that at any rate.

I hope so. The Saudi plan is a scam. The Arabs are not able to get their land back with the use of force. In 1973 they got their behinds kick back to where they started. So why not try it this way?

Bush should never support such a plan! And I hope the American people will keep backing Israel. We learned one thing: these kind of Arabs cannot be trusted. To them a peace-treaty is worth nothing. When it suits them, they will break it. The only thing that keeps Israel safe from another joint Arab attack are the nukes. And there is no doubt in my mind the Arabs will still support the terrorists after the 'normalization'. And I also know for sure there will be another intifada that comes along with every peace-treaty made with the Palestinians.

A condition for any peace proposal should, first and foremost, be a repeal and rejection by all Arab nations of the PLO charter that justifies the continued use of armed conflict as a way of recovering their "homeland." Let's see if the Arabs are really interested in peace.

knighthawk,Please keep me on your list. Thanks.

The Saudi plan is really the Bush plan that Colin Powell was to have delivered to the UN on 9/11/2002 without having consulted with the Israelis first.

Bush and Powell are making a mistake to try to pressure Israel to give the Arabs Israeli land and to give up Holy Christian sites in Jerusalem.

Bush claims he is a Christian but he acts as if he is unaware of or discounts the Bible's statements about Jerusalem which will be "a cup of trembling and a burdensome stone".

Making lasting peace in the ME does not mean Bush and Powell selling out Israel and Jerusalem and Christian Holy sites to the Islamic Saudi business partners of GW and HW Bush (Khalid Mahfouz and Alamoudi) and Prince Abdullah who Bush praises with claims that they represent a religion of peace.

Bush will regret with all his soul (Jesus Christ will deal with this) his extremely bad policy of advancing his plan which he now promotes as the Saudi plan.

Many Israelis ,Americans, and Jews and Christians will not be deceived by the AntiCHrist's phony peace plans, but sadly a significant number will be. Two of God's witnesses will speak out about the phony peace plans and against the AntiChrist for three and a half years and cause drought and work other miracles. When the AntiChrist has the two witnesses beheaded (a Saudi Islamic practice) and their bodies left to rot in the street for three and one half days, these witnesses will be resurrected from the dead and ascend into heaven in front of the entire world (TV coverage). Then the Great Tribulation will begin and continue until Jesus Christ physically returns to Earth.

Jesus Christ was resurrected from the dead as He predicted as the Son of God and His resurrection demonstrates that God accepted the sacrifice of His Son for our sins. Only Jesus Christ and God hold the keys of death unto eternal life. Satan and the AntiChrist or even any Islamic clergy can fake a resusrrection but they can resurrect no one from the dead, only GOd and Jesus Christ can. Remember this as Easter and the return of Jesus Christ approaches. It is near, it is even at the door.

I can only agree with you. Bush should never give in to the people that are out to destroy 'the People of the Book'. Like history showed, they will stab us in the back. On the outside they claim they want peace, while still supporting terrorism on the inside! But I think that Bush is playing nice with Saudi Arabia, I cannot believe he will sell out Israel by forcing Israel to accept the 'land for peace' stuff. Reagan said he agreed with the 1967 borders, if Bush is smart, he will follow that example.

We need to stand up for Israel and keep the Holy sites from falling into their hands.

Deus Lo Volt!

"We need to stand up for Israel and keep the Holy sites from falling into their hands."

And we need to keep a sharp eye for the Decievers in the Mossad and the CIA. They are far from pure in motives and methods.

Well, I guess W is Abdullah's boy now. The Saudi's own him, lock stock and barrel. He's a lot more loyal to them than he is to the Republican Party.
