Dell to Increase Indian Presence

Dell Computer Corp. plans to increase its investment in India by having more of its software development and routine office functions done from its Indian center, company chief Michael Dell said Tuesday.

"We will increase our investment as our business and need grow, but I cannot give you the figure," said Dell, chairman and chief executive of the Austin, Texas-based firm. He was making a one-day visit to Bangalore, considered India's technology hub.

Dell refused to divulge specifics about investment or recruitment, but said there would be a significant increase in the Indian staff of 800 people.

The company runs a customer contact center in Bangalore to serve Dell's customers in the United States, Europe and the Asia-Pacific. Dell also has software developed in India for bundling in the company's computers and for internal use.

Dell said he is looking at whether it would be useful to "move other back office functions to Bangalore."

Such functions often include payroll processing, accounting and staff benefits services, routine functions that may not be at the core of a company's activities and can be performed more cheaply by others.

Dell is starting to really take the major share of P.C. computer sales. HP and Compaq are screwing up big time. As one they will end up doing less than half the business they did separately. IBM is getting out of manufacturing PCs. Gateway is in trouble, and Dell is doing great.

Dell just looked at what the federal and state governments are trying to do to Microsoft. Dell has to get a strong foothold in other nations. The Justice Department and Judges can't do much to Dell in India. He can either plan to fail or plan to get half out of the country. It is obvious that Dell is going for getting some of his company out of the USA. He really has no choice.

The result of Microsoft case is any company in a strong market position or hoping to get there will start moving off shore with at least half the business.

I fail to see why that would surprise anyone smarter than Carley of HP.

Gateway has been sliding for some time. The PC business isn't good and the Rats don't like profitable companies which are unwilling to "share".
