To join the legal action, Miss Berry has violated a commission statute that forbids the use of free assistance.

**********

A commission statute prohibits using free services: "The Commission shall not accept or utilize services of voluntary or uncompensated personnel. This limitation shall apply with respect to services of members of the commission as it does with respect to services by other persons."

BOOM! There's the hook to get her out of there.

Mary Frances Berry just gave President Bush the statutory grounds to remove her from office. And its another illustration of how she and her gang of 5 at the U.S Civil Rights Commission believe they are free to do whatever they like and the laws are just you know for the "little people." What you talkin' bout Willits? Got a nice little racket going there.

Holy Jesus Christ this woman is a moron. We need Dick Cheney to step down during Bush's last year. Then have Colin Powell replace him. On the final day of Bush's presidency he resigns making Colin Powell the president for the next 4 years by the Berry standard.

This is easily the stupidest woman in America

Damn!

That lady (being polite) really boggles the mind. Talk about poster child for hypocrisy. She needs to have her racist, power-mongering butt kicked out of government for good at the very least and realistically she needs to be prosecuted.

Mary Frances has already been told by John Ashcroft and the DOJ that under NO CERTAIN TERMS, she is NOT to obtain/retain ANY legal representation for that commission.

This is a showdown. And it's going to be the end of that commission. And of her.

Think of what it would do to EVERY committee/commission in this country if her "claim" is upheld!

"The commissioners have engaged the exclusive law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, which has handled a number of death penalty cases."

Look, remove her? ....YES!

But the death penalty? ...Well, I guess that's for a jury to decide.

Democrats are up the walls defending her actions saying that if the commission was fair repubs would destroy it.

This woman is Clintonian to the core!

Really? President Bush should just weld the Commission's doors shut and prosecute the majority commissioners for violating the laws of the United States and abusing their statutory powers. I'd love to hear lil Dick Gephardt and Tommy Daschund try to defend such blatant lawlessness by an agency of the U.S government.

No, not stupid. She knows exactly what she is doing, as her goal is to make sure that minorities are as agitated as possible going into the next election. She will not win this battle, but perhaps the DemocRats will win the war (Election 2002) if enough minorities feel compelled to vote out of misguided anger towards the Bush Administration.

I'm still waiting for this to hit the major news networks. Maybe Bush should slip in a Bushism about the panel that way it would be played on ewvery news station and get front page coverage.

"This is easily the stupidest woman in America"

Evidently you never met my ex-wife. lol!

Seriously, she is not the stupidest...just one of the most ruthless. She care nothing about the law, the commisssion, her duties, or her country....Only about the power she wields in support of her agenda!

BTW the name Cru Reynoso sounds familiar...I'm originally from So.Cal. so if there are any Freepers from the LA area here...help me out...wasn't he an Assemblyman rom the Montebello area at one time?

Cru Reynoso was one of the Rose Bird Four California voters dumped back in the mid 1980s for their overturning every death penalty decision that came the California Supreme Court gang's way. Don't worry about a thing this dude isn't going to be missed either when he's send packing along with Berry and the rest of the so-called U.S CRC rascals.

I believe that Cruz Reynoso was a member of the Rose Byrd Supreme Court that was voted out of office. Says alot about this so-called commission.

So where's the info for us to take action? The people for us to picket? The news sites for us to flood? I know anything we send to her will be useless but there's somebody somewhere who we can ride on about this.

Nominations & Appointments, May 25, 1983

Morris B. Abram is currently a partner with the law firm of Paul Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton and Garrison in New York City. In 1968 - 1970 Mr. Abram served as president of Brandeis University. Mr. Abram has been long involved in civil rights activities. In 1946 Mr. Abram was a member of the American prosecutorial staff at the International Military Tribunal in Nuremburg, Germany. In 1962 - 1964 he served as a member of the U.N. Subcommittee on the Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities by appointment of President Kennedy. Between 1963 and 1968, he served as president of the American Jewish Committee. In 1965 - 1968 he served as U.N. Representative to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights. In 1970 - 1979 he also served as chairman of the United Negro College Fund. Since 1961 he served as a member of the executive committee of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. He graduated from the University of Georgia (B.A., 1938) and the University of Chicago (J.D., 1940). He was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University (B.A., 1948; M.A., 1953). He resides in New York City. He was born June 19, 1918, in Fitzgerald, Ga. Mr. Abram is a Democrat and will succeed Mary Frances Berry.

Staff director Les Jin runs the day-to-day operations of the commission.

The case for replacing Jin goes beyond his being a holdover. He's a shameless hack for Berry. He is afraid to challenge her, even when she behaves lawlessly, as in the current dispute over the commission's makeup. He also refuses to work with the commission's GOP-appointed members. He doesn't let them participate in selecting witnesses to appear at commission hearings, he won't take their names off press releases when they disagree with their content, and he was instrumental in the suppression of the dissent written by commissioners Abigail Thernstrom and Russell Redenbaugh in response to the commission's scandalously bad report on the presidential election in Florida. There are also questions about his handling of the commission's budget.
