Ex Iraqi officer has new proof of Iraq, bin Laden links: report

ROME, Nov 3 (AFP) - A former Iraqi special forces officer has given new proof of links between Islamic extremist Osama bin Laden and Iraq, Italy's La Repubblica newspaper reported on Saturday.

The newspaper said that it was told by a leading member of the London-based Iraqi National Congress (INC), Nabeel Musawi, of the testimony of the 36-year-old former officer, identified only as A.S.

The newspaper said that the former officer told of a training camp called Salman Pak in Iraq where members of bin Laden's terror network had trained as pilots and on how to seize control of aircraft.

Musawi said that the former officer told him: "There were also women pilots who were trained and I believe that the next time, if there is a next time, it could be a woman who takes over an airplane."

The source also told of a meeting on the Pakistani border in December 1998 between an Iraqi diplomat working in Turkey -- who he named as Farouk al-Hijazi -- and Osama bin Laden.

The former officer was said to have been in a poor physical state after being tortured and poisoned while in prison.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LONDRA - C'è un luogo in Europa dove si sono raccolte più prove del collegamento tra l'Iraq e Mohammed Atta, il leader del commando dell'11 settembre, di quante ne abbiano messe insieme - per sostenere il legame tra Mohammed Atta e Osama Bin Laden - tutti i servizi segreti del mondo occidentale e arabomoderato.

Questo luogo è il 169 di Knightsbridge, Londra. Ricominciare con pazienza daccapo...

Da oltre ventiquattro ore, Nabeel interroga a Londra un nuovo disertore iracheno, il quarto di questa guerra. Trentasei anni, A.S., ufficiale delle forze speciali di sicurezza a Bagdad, è stato uno degli interpreti personali di Saddam Hussein. Il 31 ottobre è stato accompagnato a Londra da un piccolo paese nel cuore dell'Europa, dove si nasconde, per raccontare dei campi di addestramento iracheni frequentati dagli arabiafgani di Osama, delle risorse batteriologiche e chimiche degli arsenali iracheni. Del ruolo dell'Iraq nell'attacco dell'11 settembre a New York e Washington.

Perché resta questo l'interrogativo ancora irrisolto del primo mese di guerra. Musawi lo propone con quieta determinazione: un egiziano di nome Mohammed Atta guida un gruppo di diciotto "martiri di Allah" contro le Torri gemelle e il Pentagono, ma per conto di chi? Nabeel chiede: "Gli Stati Uniti accusano Osama. Ma mentre si possono documentare con sette episodi i rapporti di Mohammed Atta con l'Iraq e con nove circostanze i legami di Osama con l'Iraq, che cosa e chi può confermare il rapporto di Atta con Osama?".

Che Osama fosse a conoscenza che "qualcosa di grosso" dovesse accadere, lo si può sostenere al di là di ogni dubbio ragionevole. Telefonò alla madre adottiva per congedarsi. "Ci sarà - le disse - un importante attacco, non ci sentiremo per qualche tempo" (lo ha riferito la stessa madre alle autorità pakistane). E' tutto da dimostrare, al contrario, che Osama conoscesse in quel momento l'obiettivo dell'attacco, come capita a chi organizza un attentato. Perché - ecco la tesi dell'Inc - i dettagli dell'operazione e il suo obiettivo sono stati pianificati da Atta, agente del servizio iracheno, non con Bin Laden, né con gli altri 18 kamikaze, ma con due ufficiali di el-Mukhabarat, il servizio segreto iracheno, Farouk al-Hijazi (oggi ambasciatore iracheno ad Ankara) e Ahmad Khalil Ibrahim Samir alAni, addetto diplomatico a Praga prima della sua espulsione. A.S., il quarto disertore, è ridotto malissimo. Nelle carceri di Saddam è stato torturato a lungo con ferri roventi dallo stesso figlio del dittatore, Usay. Ma - dice Nabeel Musawi - non è stata questa feroce routine della polizia segreta irachena a distruggerlo fino a farne "una larva umana". A.S. è stato lentamente avvelenato con il thallium.

Il thallium è un veleno ricavato da un metallo che ha lo stesso nome. Veleno potentissimo. I sistemi gastrointestinale e respiratorio lo assorbono molto rapidamente provocando vomito, depressione, diarrea, desquamazione, dispnea, effetti devastanti sul sistema nervoso. In larghe dosi provoca la morte, in piccole dosi l'irreversibile forma di intossicazione che oggi lascia A.S. invalido, incapace di controllare i movimenti del corpo. Le sue braccia sono scosse da improvvisi e incontrollabili tremori.

"Il piano di infiltrazione in Europa e negli Stati Uniti risale al 1991, appena dopo la fine della guerra del Golfo. Non ci sono stati problemi con nuove identità e falsi passaporti. Un ministro di un Paese del Golfo Persico, che lavora per Bagdad da 25 anni, può fornirne quanti ne vuole a Saddam", dice A.S.. Secondo le stime degli ispettori dell'Onu, il regime, che ha ammesso di averne prodotte 4 tonnellate, è ancora in grado di assicurare una produzione annua di 200 tonnellate. Il campo di addestramento di Salman Pak, costruito con la collaborazione dei tecnici tedeschi della Tyssen negli anni '80, è conosciuto dall'intelligence americana fino dal 1991 quando in un rapporto della Cia si leggeva: "Il campo di Salman Pak è noto come progetto Diyala ed è sito in una depressione del fiume Tigri. E' uno dei tre centri coinvolti nella produzione di antrace. In tutta l'area si respira un odore pestilenziale che proviene da polle sotterranee adiacenti a laboratori".

"Salman Pak è un quadrato di otto chilometri di lato - racconta A.S. - E' diviso in tre sezioni. La sezione più protetta e segreta, ancora più protetta di quella riservata ai "Martiri di Saddam", è a disposizione degli arabiafgani. E' al di là delle acque del fiume, oltre una striscia di alberi e di filo spinato. Ha un ingresso separato. Qui da cinque anni c'è un Boeing 707 utilizzato per l'addestramento. Qualunque satellite può rilevarlo. Vi si addestrano tre persone alla volta: pilotaggio, dirottamento, controllo dei passeggeri senza armi da fuoco. Sono state addestrate anche donne pilota. E credo che la prossima volta, se ci sarà una prossima volta, potrebbe essere una donna a dirottare un aereo. I corsi durano cinque mesi: addestramento fisico, preparazione all'omicidio, confezione di valigie e autobomba".

Anche Mohammed Atta è passato da Salman Pak, sostiene convinto l'Inc. "Ma, più che un allievo, è stato un addestratore. E presto riusciremo a dimostrarlo".

Si ritorna dunque ad Atta. Nabeel ricapitola: "A.S. è il quarto disertore. Il fisico nucleare Khidhir Hamza ha raccontato gli esperimenti del regime. Sabah Khalifa Khodada Alami, istruttore della guardia repubblicana, ha spiegato come a Salman Pak ci si addestri al dirottamento aereo e alle tecniche di omicidio a mani nude. Un altro ex ufficiale dell'intelligence irachena ha svelato per la prima volta l'addestramento a bordo del Boeing 707 parcheggiato all'interno di Salman Pak. Atta ha incontrato almeno tre volte uomini dell'intelligence irachena a Praga. A.S. ha raccontato i dettagli dell'incontro del dicembre 1998 tra Farouk alHijazi e Osama Bin Laden sulle montagne dell'Hindukush, alla frontiera tra Pakistan e Afghanistan. L'Iraq fornì a Osama una tonnellata di antrace e l'appoggio finanziario attraverso forniture di greggio a Dubai da collocare sul mercato internazionale sottocosto".

"Dove sono dunque le evidenze che possono convincerci che Atta ha lavorato per Osama? Non ci sono - prosegue Nabeel - perché Atta non ha mai lavorato per Osama. Atta è sempre stato un agente del servizio iracheno. Di quella rete di penetrazione in Europa che può contare su centinaia di agenti controllati dalle stazioni di Parigi, Londra, Cipro e Dubai. Su infiltrati in Germania, Danimarca, Svezia, Norvegia. Soltanto a Londra, di questi agenti ne conosco almeno quaranta con nome e cognome.

L'11 settembre è la logica prosecuzione dell'attentato alle torri del 1993, così come Mohammed Atta è l'uomo che riesce lì dove aveva fallito Ramzi Youssef. E il legame di Atta con l'Iraq non sarebbe mai stato scoperto se Mohammed non avesse avuto la necessità di incontrare i suoi superiori".

Molti ancora si chiedono perché Atta nell'ultimo anno giri come una trottola dalla California alla Spagna, dalla Germania alla Repubblica Ceca, di nuovo agli Stati Uniti. Il motivo è semplice, a sentire Musawi. "Nessuno che fa il lavoro di Atta o di al-Hijazi si fida del telefono, della posta elettronica. Tutto può essere intercettato e allora bisogna incontrarsi a quattr'occhi per avere ordini, denaro contante e quel che occorre per fare il lavoro predisposto. Secondo nostre fonti, Mohammed Atta ha ricevuto, negli incontri con Al-Hijazi e Ahmad Khalil Ibrahim Samir al-Ani denaro e thallium. E infatti è con denaro cash che ha finanziato l'operazione Torri gemelle, bonificando in contanti circa 60 mila dollari al mese per mantenere la rete dei 19 kamikaze. L'unico contatto di Atta con il mondo esterno è stato l'Iraq".

Atta dunque, per l'Inc, è la prova che l'operazione delle Torri gemelle è stata una joint-venture in cui Osama ha messo a disposizione i martiri e l'Iraq la leadership e le risorse finanziarie e logistiche. Così si spiegano, secondo l'opposizione irachena, il mistero dei quindici mesi in cui Atta, tra il 1999 e il 2000, scompare nel nulla. "Non era in Afghanistan, non era negli Usa, non era in Europa. Dove era? L'unico Paese in cui si può scomparire è l'Iraq", dice Nabeel Musawi.

Quanto è credibile la ricostruzione dell'Iraqi National Congress? E' evidente che l'opposizione irachena ha tutto l'interesse a tirare dentro in questa guerra anche il regime di Saddam Hussein. E' tuttavia altrettanto evidente che il lavoro di indagine, di testimonianza e documentazione che si sta raccogliendo al 169 di Knightsbridge produce fatti che possono essere verificati e controllati dall'intelligence dei Paesi occidentali. Soltanto a voler affrontare questo compito. Ed è qui il punto. C'è qualcuno oggi che ha voglia di vedere l'ombra di Saddam dietro l'11 settembre?
