SYDNEY, Australia -- It may not be ready for George Bush's "first war of the 21st century." But it may well be ready if there's a second.

In perhaps the most audacious upgrade of high-speed weaponry since the introduction of the Gatling Gun, Australian inventor Mike O'Dwyer has developed a machine gun that can fire bullets at a rate of 1 million rounds per minute.

I read about this a few months ago. This thing rocks, I think a weapon like this would make an excellent close range, last minute missle defense on ships. The downside is that once the barrel full of bullets is fired, you have to replace the whole barrel, so probably this would be relegated to static defenses somehow.

Not that new, really. I heard about this almost a year ago.
All the same, I'd love to own one just to see the look on Janet Reno's or Sarah Brady's face!!

What's the point? An M61/A1 fires 6000 rounds a minute, can be reloaded in minutes, and doesn't require a barrel change for 60,000 rounds. This is a toy with no practical application.

I think there is something they aren't telling us about this. Moving roughly 160,000 #'s of ammo a minute requires a lot of energy, no matter how you do it. Think of it this way... 40 cars per minute.

"This means the gun would be worthless if it is taken from a policeman by an assailant."

Perhaps it's in the picture ... but the pistol grip is not really all that visible.

I'd like to see the training video, where the assailant wrestles this pop-gun from the hands of a policeman.

That would be two Dodge pickup trucks with payload cranes, "duking it out?"

Ducks Unlimited, call your office.

Party poop. (You might say the same thing about half the stuff in my gunsafe...)

OTOH, you might have a point...one of my instructors insists that high-cap mags are only good for helping you miss faster...

Actually I believe they intended this to be a possible replacement for landmines.

"By lashing together a series of rapid-fire barrels filled with mortars, and remotely controlling when and where they fire, this technology could be a replacement for landmines."

Looks like it would be a great gun for hunting, and the season is just starting.

In Afghanistan that is.

So if you build a man-portable version so some grunt can carry it into battle, like DARPA seems to want, are you going to have a dump truck following him around to carry all the ammo this thing's gonna use?
