School board in Virginia votes to restore Confederate names

The education board for a rural Virginia county voted early on Friday to restore the names of Confederate generals stripped from two schools in 2020, making the mostly white, Republican district the first in the U.S. to take such an action.

By a 5-1 vote, the Shenandoah County board overturned its 2020 decision that stripped a public high school and elementary school of their original names honoring three military leaders of the pro-slavery South in the Civil War.

Under the board's action, Mountain View High School will again become known as Stonewall Jackson High, while Honey Run Elementary School will revert to the name Ashby Lee Elementary.

The names belong to some of the most well-known military leaders of the Confederacy. Robert E. Lee was commander of the Army of Northern Virginia; Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson was a Confederate infantry general, and Turner Ashby was a rebel cavalry commander. All of them were Virginians.

Jackson, Hitler, Stalin, and Mao would have broken even more eggs to make an omelet.

Most western omelets have a libertarian flavour augmented by hot-sauce to taste.

I guess the odd cowboy likes an extra helping of fascism baked in.

The poster noting that most modern anti-Confederates are self-righteous jerks, at best, may have hit the nail on the head. Usually I root for the cowboy, but there are times one is moved to root for the bull.

Yes, the leftist agenda is to destroy American History. I love the United States and see the Confederates and the left as the same. But you have your opinion, and I have mine.

You put Jackson with Hitler and Stalin?!! Jackson is Trump’s hero. He was for small government, and anti-monopoly. Jacksonian foreign policy is based on his princaples, He was one of the greatest Americans.

Jackson was for small government and would have hated LBJ.

That’s your opinion. In their eyes Lincoln destroyed the Republic because he wouldn’t let the states secede.

Lincoln converted the Republic from one based on CONSENT to one based on force, threats and violence. He effectively destroyed the original Republic the founders created and erected an empire in its place. As Lee pointed out in his correspondence with Lord Acton:

"I yet believe that the maintenance of the rights and authority reserved to the states and to the people, not only essential to the adjustment and balance of the general system, but the safeguard to the continuance of a free government. I consider it as the chief source of stability to our political system, whereas the consolidation of the states into one vast republic, sure to be aggressive abroad and despotic at home, will be the certain precursor of that ruin which has overwhelmed all those that have preceded it."

Reflect on where we are today. A Leviathan in Washington unrestrained by anything. A Levithan which tramples on the constitutional rights of citizens with impunity. A Leviathan which constantly meddles abroad, maintains military bases in scores of countries and which gets involved in constant foreign wars. A Leviathan which has racked up debts we will never be able to repay and which only ever goes further into debt with every passing year. Lincoln paved the way for this.

It is perhaps regrettable that a Hamiltonian was in power at that time. A Jacksonian would NEVER have gone along with that stupid soft money greenback plan and a national bank.

They were not Lee’s slaves. They were the property of G.W.P. Custus, Lee’s father in-law. Lee was one of the executors listed the Custus will. The will authorized the executors to free the slaves once the debts and legacies’ were paid in full. But under no circumstance were they to be kept in bondage longer than five years after Custus’s death. Lee kept some of the Custus slaves for the entire five years, freeing the last of them in Dec 1862.

that is true. Lee was the Executor of Custis' will and kept some of the slaves for the term allowed in the will until the debts Custis incurred were paid off.

Of course Lee had owned a handful of slaves earlier in his life and had manumitted them.

Jackson is certainly better than the other three I put him with, but there are aspects of his character that may be despicable that you seem to find endearing.

Someone who is for the Union come hell or high water is probably not for small government, and someone who thinks that Jackson should have hung Calhoun certainly is not.

Trump is very good for being from the east side of the Mississippi and the North side of the Mason-Dixon line, (or to put things less delicately, the wrong side of both) but his evaluation of character is not one of his greatest strengths. However, better he as president than you.

Lee was one of the executors of the Custus estate. There were 4 other executors named in the will.

Jackson was for BOTH the Union and small government. 1913 was the devastating year for America with the creation of the monster fed. Jackson fought a National Bank, and he crushed it. And he warned against it coming back. He was for Hard Money. He believed in economy in Government. And he saw the National Debt as a great threat. He was the ONLY President to completely pay off the debt.

And in Georgia- restore Fort Gordon from the idiotic Fort Eisenhower (who came to Augusta once... to play at Augusta National Golf Club— never even visited Ford Gordon!!!)

Gen. John B. Gordon- Governor of Georgia twice and US Senator from GA twice (elected back then by the GA legislature before the idiotic 17th Amendment came to be).

War hero, statesman, brilliant tactician for not have gone to a military school. Superb equestrian and heroic leader in many major battles. At the surrender in Appomattox, Joshua Chamberlain describes Gordon’s returned honorific salute to Chamberlain’s command to “carry arms” Quoting Chamberlain:
“ Gordon at the head of the column, riding with heavy spirit and downcast face, catches the sound of shifting arms, looks up, and, taking the meaning, wheels superbly, making with himself and his horse one uplifted figure, with profound salutation as he drops the point of his sword to the boot toe; then facing to his own command, gives word for his successive brigades to pass us with the same position of the manual,—honor answering honor.”

Decades of Georgians were inspired by this leader to join the US Military and fight in wars all over the world to defend Freedom. That is the kind of leader whose name needs to be returned to Fort Gordon.

Get this: You are NOT going to change my mind. I find the present collection of anti-Confederates to be a bunch of self-righteous jerks. At best. At worst they’re leftists trying to destroy all of American history.

You've hit the nail on the head. The vast majority of them are Leftists. The whole "all about slavery" myth was PC Revisionist dogma pushed starting in the 1980s but Leftists who started their long march through the institutions in the 1960s. They saw everything through the light of racism and the Civil Rights movement of the 60s and they brought this with them in their reinterpretation of American history.

The initial goal was to demonize Southerners and all things Southern.....to try to pin everything on racism/slavery. It was only a short jump from there to the Founding Fathers a couple generations earlier. The overwhelming majority of the Founding Fathers were Southerners and owned slaves (Washington, Madison, Jefferson, Mason, Henry, Monroe, John Jay, etc etc). Once the children and grandchildren had been effectively demonized they could move on to demonizing the parents and grandparents. Thus delegitimizing America.

I pointed all of this out over 30 years ago in college and law school in the early to mid 90s. Lefties swore up and down that that would never happen....that I was just being paranoid. I told them I wasn't a fool and it was plain as day that that's where all of this was headed.

Those on the Left doing this were cynical and IMO evil. Those on the Right who fell for it was just complete idiots. You had to be a moron not to see where that was headed.

twice now in this thread “Session” is used-— when what is proper (misspelled?) is the word “Secession”.

Typos assumed. On other posts the word “succession” is mistakenly used.

Secede. To leave the Union— to Secede from the Republic, as was thought to be a State’s right to do so from their electorates.

Jackson had a great deal going for him, especially for a democrat. You point out many of his true accomplishments.

He was not the only president to run a surplus—IIRC Clinton ran a couple—and digging one’s way out of a hole is partly a factor of how big the hole is and partly a factor on how many people are digging the wrong way.

Calhoun was for both the union and for small government as well. He, unlike Jackson, had the order correct. Jackson, and you, and I would argue Lincoln, has the order wrong.

FWIW—I greatly admire Jefferson, but think that he went about the Louisiana purchase the wrong way. The Constitution is not divine, but play by the rules all the time if you want the rules to be followed.

Don’t forget Lincoln ordered the imprisonment of the entire Maryland Legislature to prevent a vote on Secession of Maryland from the Union. Thereby surrounding D.C. with Seceded States.

He ordered their imprisonment. Directed executive military order on civilians.

Thank you. That is helpful. I’m a phonics man myself who is too trusting of spell-check, and beyond that don’t trust a man who insists on spelling a word only one way, but if I am led through the etymology, there is a decent chance the official spelling will stick.

It would have been much better for the post war South if a faggot actor hadn’t been helped to kill Lincoln. Lincoln was a peacemaker and a threat to the booty the Radical Republicans expected to steal from the South— he would have denied them many of the Reconstruction rip offs they later performed.

The South once voted for Wilson and fdr, too of the biggest big government traitors ever. Now, thankfully, it is a bastion of Conservatism. The New Yorker Cleveland was also a near-great President, as was the Vermonter, Coolidge.

I like Coolidge—in fact, I wrote him in rather than vote for Romney. Massachusetts did well to put a Vermonter in the statehouse. As to Cleveland, if he had gone for the minting of silver we might have avoided fiat money.

That you think of the South as a bastion of conservatism says more about you than it does of the south. The south is a bastion of conservative democrats who have become moderate republicans, as well as black democrats who don’t fully buy into everything that the Ivy League is selling.
