Pentagon official admits U.S. hypersonic defenses ‘inadequate’

A Senate Armed Services hearing turned heated this week when Sen. Angus King, chairman of the Strategic Forces subcommittee, laid into John Hill, deputy assistant defense secretary for space and missile defense, about why the Biden administration’s 2025 missile defense budget request falls far short on funding to maintain readiness against the growing threat of hypersonic missiles from adversaries — namely Russia.

“We have no defense for hypersonic missiles, yes or no? Mr. Hill? Any defense on hypersonic missile?” Mr. King asked during one exchange. If Russia launches a hypersonic missile traveling 6,000 mph and “you are the commander of an aircraft carrier in the Greenland gap … what do you do?” he asked.

Mr. Hill responded: “We have some systems in the terminal stage, but we need more. You are correct … our hypersonic defenses are inadequate. SM-67 is in the Navy’s terminal range Patriot … No argument, we need to focus on hypersonic defenses.”

One of the problems with hypersonics, is they have a hard time flying low. Very dense atmosphere heats them very, very fast.

The hypersonic capability is starting to put tat way of thinking in the past. They are both nuke and conventional.

I see no utility in that as a fire control system is required.

“Just another excuse to shovel more money to the corrupt arms industry at a time when we are essentially bankrupt. I dare say that the financial hole we’ve allowed ourselves to dig is way more of a threat to our national security than worrying about missile interceptors.”

Pure and simple fact...

Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerer of death’s construction
In the fields, the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
Death and hatred to mankind
Poisoning their brainwashed minds

Oh, Lord, yeah

Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that all to the poor, yeah
Time will tell on their power minds
Making war just for profit
Treating people just like pawns in chess
Wait till their judgment day comes, yeah

Now, in darkness, world stops turning
Ashes where their bodies burning
No more war pigs have the power
Hand of God has struck the hour
Day of Judgment, God is calling
On their knees, the war pigs crawling
Begging mercies for their sins
Satan, laughing, spreads his wings

Oh, Lord, yeah

True but the Russians look like they have overcome some of these factors.

Because if we stopped antagonizing Russia the military industrial complex wouldn’t have a reason to keep spending money that we don’t have on them. It’s all a gigantic scam but unfortunately most Americans fall for it.

A first strike is always devastating. You only get one of those per war.

They’re already using them in combat:

There’s also the Zircon that’s in service but I haven’t read that it’s been used:

Hypersonics at 6000MPH?

Russia’s 19,800MPH Avangard and 16,000MPH RS-28 Sarmat missile, China’s 19,000MPH Dongfeng-41, begs to differ.

We also don’t have any effective defense against ICBMs at 15,000MPH.

For 70+ years and 350+ billion dollars, we have nothing.

SM-67 is in the Navy’s terminal range Patriot

It's the SM-6, not SM-67. And it has nothing to do with the Patriot. Of course, the reason Russia doesn't actually fire a missile at a US Carrier is the retaliation they would face. I'm positive that given the chance, I could punch Mike Tyson in the mouth. But I doubt I would like what followed. Same with the USN.

Sadly, I think we will find out soon.
It may make aircraft carriers less valuable …

We’ll see

Not your area of expertise, eh?

Do a search for the Pershing system guidance to begin with. Over 40 years ago.

Just how maneuverable are they going 5,000 kts? Maybe slight adjustments like a jdam but a turn? Hell no.

Biden cut $400 billion from missile defense following in 0bma’s footsteps or follow 0bama’s directive. Pick one or both.

“We also don’t have any effective defense against ICBMs at 15,000MPH.”

Sure we do. Tiered, multi-layer defense systems tested many times. We just don’t have enough.
