News analysis: Why Putin is raising the specter of nuclear weapons again
LA Times via Yahoo ^ | May 6th, 2024 | Laura King

Once again, Russian President Vladimir Putin is seemingly rattling the nuclear saber. But why now?

The Kremlin, citing recent comments by Western leaders regarding the war in Ukraine, said Monday that it would soon carry out simulated use of battlefield, or tactical, nuclear weapons — marking the first time Moscow announced such an exercise.

The announcement drew a sharp response. U.S. Defense Department spokesman Maj. Gen. Patrick Ryder called it “entirely inappropriate.” NATO spokesperson Farah Dakhlallah termed Moscow’s plans “dangerous and irresponsible,” and the European Union called on Russia to “stop the escalation.”

Like so many pronouncements from Moscow, this one’s timing might matter as much as its substance.

“For the umpteenth time, the government in Ukraine was elected by its people”

Yeah, that’s right. They just had another free and fair election last week./s

“Nukes were never going into Ukraine. That is just a lie that Putin tells people.”

Why do you speak as if you know that to be a fact?

US nukes are in multiple NATO countries, soon in Poland.

They did not secede. They were seized by the Russians. Do not tell me you actually believe in those bogus referenda. I would have thought you were more intelligent than that.

If you look at the historical maps you will find that Ukraine was part of Russia since 1754 and until the collapse of the Soviet Union. Why do you find it difficult to understand why Russians would not want to be Russians considering what the Ukraine Nazis were and are doing to them? Putin has apologized to those beleaguered people for not acting much sooner than he did.

Yanukovich was elected supporting EU integration. He betrayed that mandate under pressure from Russia and refused to sign a EU/Ukraine agreement that had been approved by the parliament and which he had previously supported. He instead sought to join a Russian lead economic union. This is what lead to the protests, not the CIA. The protests turned violent after Yanukovich enacted draconian anti-protest laws.

After Yanukovich fled the country he was removed from office by the parliament, not by a militant coup. The parliament, not the CIA, then chose an interim president until a new election could be held. There have since been two presidential elections. This is not the CIA coup scenario painted by Russian propagandists.

Even HAD Zelenski been legit elected HE HAS FINISHED HIS TERM AND ILLEGALLY CANCELLED ALL ELECTIONS. He is therefore now an illegal dictator not an elected leader. This is not debatable.

Sorry, but the constitution does not allow elections during times of martial law. Zelensky remains the constitutionally elected president.

Their Nazi party is openly celebrated and runs the government, they started ethnic cleansing in the Donbass, banned the Russian language, invited in NATO, and started shelling people for the crime of not saluting the coup.

How long are you going to repeat these lies? The Ukrainian government is not a Nazi regime. There was no ethnic cleansing in Donbas. The Russian language was not banned. Civilians were not deliberately shelled. But I guess the Ukrainians need to be demonized in order to justify Russia's attempt to again subjugate Ukraine.

Yanukovich was elected supporting EU integration.

LOL. Then why is Ukraine not in the EU today after 10 years since the coup? I'll tell you why, it's because the EU doesn't want them in the EU! Which makes your whole brainwashed argument nonsense.

If you look at the historical maps you will find that Ukraine was part of Russia since 1754 and until the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Earlier it was part of Poland/Lithuania. Perhaps Russia should step aside and let Poland and Lithuania retake Ukraine and Belarus. Of maybe we should let Mongolia retake Moscow. After all, it was once a part of the Mongol empire. Poland, Finland, and the Baltic states were also parts of Russia. Does this give Russia the right to invade them?

Why do you find it difficult to understand why Russians would not want to be Russians…

Other than Crimea, the areas occupied by Russia have Ukrainian majorities, not Russian. In the case of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, 82% and 70% Ukrainian majorities respectfully. Are we to believe that 90% of them voted to join Russia?

…considering what the Ukraine Nazis were and are doing to them?

The claim of a genocide directed against the ethnic Russians in Donbas is pure fiction. Indeed, the Russian occupation in 2014 occurred to quickly for this to be a justification.

The EU-Ukraine Association Agreement came into effect in 2017. This is the first step toward full membership. I would not expect that to happen until after the conclusion of the war with Russia.

Yes. Russian propagandists have constantly overstated what the language law did. It merely mandated that Ukrainian be used in state institutions and that in the media Ukrainian had to be used alongside Russian. Contrary to all the hype, the use of Russian was not outlawed. The law was no more burdensome than that of Quebec.

I was just a kid back then, but I remember the deep hole that my older brother dug on the bluffs above the Etowah River for a fallout shelter.   The Cuban Missile Crisis was no joke.

The Soviets 90 miles from the United States with ICBMs was unconscionable.

Why now, do some fools think it is perfectly OK to have our Military Might in the name of our proxy, NATO, to be on Russia's border.

This is much worse than the Cuban Missile Crisis in Russia's point of view.   How dare we do this with no compunction against it?

I’ve always thought it was stupid to mandate English and French on everything in Canada.

Ask Neville Chamberlain how well that works...

“The only thing we learn from history, is that we never learn from history.”

Putin should have been “retired” a long time ago. Poroshenko too as that might have prevented a comedian from taking over.

Where does Israel come in on this issue? Or are you against Israel defending itself as well?

If Mexico attacked us, would you be just as stupid about us fighting back?

Has it even made the slightest move that way?

Yes. Vladamir has rattle his nuclear saber at both of them over their concerns about his attacking Ukraine. Same way he did when they had the same qualms over Georgia...

Probably be the same concerns when he invades one or the other once he's done with his current war of aggression.

Nothing to do with my comment.

Nothing to do with Putin mass murdering Ukrainians for no reason.

Your comment is not rational.

Are you loyal to Russia?

Absolute nonsense. There is no “nuclear sabre”, nothing has been rattled except guys like you. The Russians have warned AGAINST nuclear war, which is what NATO is openly seeking. Participating in a war on Russia’s border IS nuclear sabre-rattling.

The Russkies are doing nuclear exercises same as ever, same as NATO. That isn’t sabre rattling. Russia doesnt want war with fhe west for thesimple reason it would lose horribly. It can’t even fight Ukraine! Russia is the underdog in fear of a much larger, much stronger NATO. It wants to pacify and annex chunks of Ukraine, NOT fight NATO.
