Mother, 62, is diagnosed with world's deadliest cancer (Pancreatic) years in advance thanks to artificial-intelligence-powered blood test: 'AI saved my life, I won the lottery'

Like millions of people in the US, artificial intelligence was just something Dianne Balon read about on the news.

Little did she know the tech would come to save her life.

Despite being a picture of health, an AI-powered blood test in 2022 revealed that one of the world's deadliest cancers was silently forming in Ms Balon's pancreas.

It caught the tumor in its earliest form, before it had the chance to grow and spread, which is when the vast majority of pancreatic cancers are caught - at which point it's too late.

The results of the test provided a key 'piece of the puzzle'. The now-62-year-old went on to have surgery to remove the lesion that would've developed into 'full-blown pancreatic cancer,' according to her surgeon.

'I am incredibly grateful,' she told DailyMail.com. 'AI absolutely saved my life, I won the lottery.'

She revealed that even her surgeon was caught off-guard before the operation, telling her: 'Why are you here? We don't usually get to see people this early in the process.'

Ms Balon's cancer journey began in 2017 at a health conference, which she was attending through her work as vice president at a Canadian health insurer.

The mother-of-two, from Edmonton, Canada, saw a presentation by Molecular You, a Vancouver biotech startup that had just launched a new blood test.

It works by analyzing more than 250 biomarkers which even the most sophisticated blood tests available in most hospitals cannot detect.

The results are then run through a database by an AI program trained to look for subtle changes to immune markers and inflammation, amongst other things.

Who could have imagined this level of technology 25 years ago?

There are several drugs now in phase 2 and phase 3 trials that may be able to put the kibosh on pancreatic cancer. Advances in this field are now very rapid.

I can understand why medical costs exceed inflation as the product with expensive R&D gets better over time.

Now contrast that with education costs which grow more than inflation as the product stagnates or worsens...

Think about that.

I lost my Grandpa. He was only with us a couple of months after his diagnosis, and his last days were very painful. He was 77.

Easy to come up with a test that detects rare, scary things early. Do nothing, but report every 'result' as positive for them! Gives 100% sensitivity. And specificity no higher than the real incidence of that condition.

Specificity of this AI meta-analysis isn't discussed in the article. The real cost of the test isn't what you're charged for it, but rather that, plus all the money spent chasing its false positives, plus the cost of all the complications from the extra testing. Money which might have been spent on other things, including other medical tests or procedures with better established cost/benefit ratios.

AI doing things that no human being can do.

But, who programmed that AI system to do what it did?

Must not have been a human. Humans cannot program AI that is so advanced. Must be a much higher intelligence that can’t even be imagined by humans.

AI is out of this world!

Pancreatic cancer is the beast due to lack of detection. It’s too late for our family, but hoping for breakthrough and relief for others.

Interesting timing for this announcement in light of a story from a couple of months ago...

That's the way human language works.

Word usage isn't cast in stone. It changes and adapts.

The term "AI" is used differently than it once was. Get over it.
