Shadow speaker: Hakeem Jeffries quietly wrests control from Mike Johnson

Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) found himself in an unusual position for a minority leader last week:

It was he, not the House speaker, who had the ultimate power to decide whether legislation came to the floor.

Why it matters: Democrats got everything they wanted – a $95 billion foreign aid bill, the credit for passing it, and adversaries more divided than ever. In their telling, that total victory wasn't a sure thing.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), a master legislative tactician, heaped praise on her successor: "He is fabulous. We're so proud of him."

One senior House Democrat told Axios: "It easily could have fallen apart ... He played the cards the way you'd want to play them."

"I would not want to play blackjack against him," the lawmaker added.

He presented it to the reps of ALL people and they voted for it. And that's the way it is. Get over it.

You know, for the longest time, I couldn't make up my mind whether you were a shill for the establishment or just an effing idiot. But I think I've achieved some clarity at this point.

“That’s right - he “unfriended” him.”

How so? Did he make a public statement?

Even when we had 20+ seat majority the GOP couldn’t legislate and lead.

Legislate what? The rats own the senate and the white house, what you gonna legislate?

Well, the money they’ll send to Ukraine will be gone in a month’s time. Then the Ukrainians will again be asking for more and the shit show continues. And we’ll again see how the Republicans will fold.

There is immense power as a majority House. You just don't know it because the GOP never exercises it.

I will not get over it. The man is a crook and a fraud. He made sure the base got nothing.

Legislate what? The rats own the senate and the white house, what you gonna legislate?

The GOP had the White House and both Houses of Congress from 2001-2007 and 2017-2019. They controlled both Houses of Congress from 1995-2007 but without the White House from 1995-2001. They controlled the House from 2011-2019.

In all that time, the catastrophic state of the nation has radically worsened.

No one can doubt if the period 1995-2019 had seen that much Democrat control, all of their major policy choices would be the law of the land.

I know that all members of the FR Imaginary GOP have excuses for the failure to govern, for the involvement in foreign wars on behalf of alien peoples, for the inability to pass a budget or rein in "wokeness" in all the elements of the State - but the long con is coming to an end, and it is going to be very, very ugly.

Stop blaming "demonrats" for the state of the nation. WE gave complete power to the Republicans, and they worked tirelessly to make things worse.

Didn’t have to “wrest” anything. Johnson willingly gave up control. If not, he can be knocked over with a feather.

Jim, you are right on target. This is WWF wrestling, without the veneer of two opponents both trying to win. It’s all in the open for undamaged people to see.

They have put their precious party above the countries needs and thus we are about to lose the country. Aside from very briefly being on offense with Reagan, Gingrich(a year) and Trump the Republicans have done nothing. They won’t even play defense against the Marxist, they just give them a wink, get a dollar amount and bend over and say be gentle good friend from across the aisle.

We have the largesse—the credit, if not the cash—to help countries all over the world defend their borders.
It’s been this way since 1986 when the democrats and open borders gop assured Reagan, “Sign this general amnesty, sir, and we’ll secure our border, for reals!”
Over the last 23 years the congress has been unable to come up with a budget, not one time—they require “continuing resolutions”. So they can spend more money than we have on everything but securing our own borders.
Money machine goes brrrrrrrr! $34,600,000,000,000 later, once again—the cobbler’s children go unshod.
With this as their legacy our children will curse our memories.
Anyone not furious at our federal government by this time simply hasn’t been paying attention.

Your tagline: America’s founders were the farthest thing from “conservatives” you can imagine.

Trump should announce the creation of a new political party. Now. The Republican Party is as dead as the Whigs or Know Nothings.
