“If the House GOP loses its majority next year, it might well be because Speaker Mike Johnson sold out Republican voters by failing to fund border security while working with Democrats to funnel billions more taxpayer dollars to Ukraine — after he repeatedly said he wouldn’t do precisely that. “

The base is going to completely abandon congressional Republicans if those bills hit the floor. They’ll certainly lose the House, and take hits in the Senate.

And if Trump continues to side with them, he’ll lose too.

It will be Matt Gaetz’s fault for creating the problem to begin with. And Getz used to be my favorite Congressman, as my posting history clearly shows.

If Gaetz wants to avoid the blame, he could try another motion to vacate and hope to get someone better. The fact he won’t indicates he knows how bad he messed up last time.

Why can’t they just throw him out as speaker then throw him out of the Republican party? That way he can’t remain speaker for the house as he would no longer be a member of the majority. He is obviously not a Republican....so he shouldn’t be able to call himself one.

And Senator Lindsey Graham’s fault for proposing a federal abortion ban and bringing out the “Death to America’s babies” vote.

It is not just Johnson, it will be on Trump and the Republicans in the House. Trump endorsed him and Ukraine funding just days ago. No one is making a privileged motion to vacate the chair, so they are just venting, all talk, nothing more. Even here on FR, look at the comments over the past several days since Trump appeared with Johnson, many are twisting themselves into pretzels trying to keep up with Trump—Johnson okay, aid to Ukraine without aid to our border is okay, abortion is now okay, and so one. Enjoy the ride.

The mid-terms were a disaster for the Republicans—as most estimates showed them winning about 40 seats. They barely scraped by, by only a few seats. The democrats had one of the best mid-term performances ever—when it should have been a massacre for them. Clinton and Obama lost big time in their mid-terms

If Johnson and the Republicans keep p*ssing off their base, this upcoming election will be a disaster also. I am sure Biden and the democrats are ecstatic by Johnson’s total capitulation on border security.

Biden said he would not sign separate bills. Johnson caved and Biden won big time—at the continued expense of drugs, crime and an unconscionable massive invasion on our southern border,

Thank you, Mr. Speaker!

Can someone tell me how a democrat House would help a single conservative?

I know next to nothing about Speaker Johnson but...
it must be difficult to get anything good passed when the DemoNaziCommie contingent votes as a solid hardcore leftist block while the GOP representatives scatter all over the place from conservatives to libertarians to country-clubbers to UniParty enablers of the commieNazi agenda.

relying on Republican politicians to support anything useful or good is like trying to herd cats

Having said all that “in defense” of Johnson, his failure to at least keep GOP representatives IN the House has Tragedy written all over it. Why? Because the House is not only the Constitutional source for impeachments. The House also will SELECT THE NEXT PRESIDENT in case the DNC Election Theft Machine doesn’t quite get the job done in the several states. (See Constitution Amendment 12). Then Senator Schumer’s Senate gets to choose the Veep.

Not to be TOO conspiratorially-minded about this but the timing of the GOP decline in the House speaks loudly that it is likely being orchestrated by the Puppetmeisters controlling the DNC. It is at least possible and it would fit perfectly into their Agenda.

This shrinking majority is made worse by his and his lieutenants’ feckless leadership and unwillingness to play hardball with Democrats and establishment Republicans.

I’m one of the few here who isn’t inclined to be too hard on Johnson. He’s a legislative leader, not an executive. How do you “play hardball” with two factions who collectively comprise at least 80% of the House members?

Traitor Mike Johnson is compromised and dedicated to Joe Biden and destroying traditional America.

Blackmail Op ….. again! It’s rather obvious.

Funny how the corrupt traitors mirror Fox News.

Fox News ignores the Debt aspect of funding Ukraine. They don’t talk about who’s going to be saddled with that Debt and how it’ll affect our economy.

a profile in spinelessness

That's not unique to Johnson, it's practically a requirement for GOP leadership in Congress.

Johnson is now working very hard to give Biden and the Democrats everything they wanted while getting zero in return — and still nothing has been done about the border. (Less than nothing, actually. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and his Democrats this week disposed of impeachment articles without a trial for Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, whom the House voted to impeach over the border fiasco. Senate Dems, who enjoy an even slimmer majority in their chamber, made it clear there will be no accountability for the Biden administration over the border.)

Johnson is falling into the same trap that all prior Republican leaders from both chambers always find themselves: Republicans believe they are doing the work of the American People; Democrats believe they are doing the work of the Democrat Party. Furthermore, Democrats know that Republicans think this way and use their naïveté as a weapon against them.

Republicans never treat Democrats as dishonest actors, while Democrats always treat Republicans as patsies to be duped. Every time the Republican base tries to build up enough new blood in the caucus in Congress, their leadership makes moves to undermine that effort to protect themselves, and then they go back to DC to be rolled once again by Democrats.

It's demoralizing to watch it happen again and again and again, but we can't stop trying. It's about something I posted very early in my FR career: we are being forced to wander in the desert of DC politics until the last of the Watergate era generation dies off, and then we can cross the River Potomac and begin rebuilding our party.

Johnson is, if anything, worse than McCarthy, and McCarthy was weak.

Why is the GOP incapable of getting a principled conservative into the Speakership? Does the FBI have pictures of every GOP House member in a compromising position?

This I KNOW.

There is ONLY one political party represented in DC.

The only question becomes is Trump a member?

Since Trump is not a dictator nor is that his desire as the haters would have you believe, he has to come to some kind of terms with what is in place.

Trump has to work with the party leadership that is in place, however treacherous it may be.

He may have supported McCarthy for the speakership, but what were his choices?

House leadership is voted on by the membership no one else.

In my view, the problem in the 2023 speakership election was the holdouts didn’t have the gonads to stay the course.

They should have had as many votes taken as it took for Lyin’ Kevin to step down.

I’m not sure who would have been the best replacement back in 2023, maybe Jim Jordan, but Jordan or any other serious candidate would have never actively sought the speakership until Lyin’ Kevin withdrew.

Gaetz and crew caved and got really NOTHING but the ability to take McCarthy out at a future date which they did and replaced him with Johnson who was a default candidate and neither ready nor qualified to lead.

I refuse to trash Trump as some on this board continue to do.

If Trump had his way he’d be fighting for those of us who want to save what is left of this shell of a Republic.

But Trump has to fight an all out war on every front just to attempt to run a viable campaign for office.

Trump is fighting like no one that I have ever seen on the public stage.

He is doing so at a great personal toll and cost.

I fear that the truth is a majority of Republicans holding office in the legislative branch could care less if it’s Trump or Biden who wins this next election.

For those of us outside the beltway who have been held hostage by the GOPe wing of the Uniparty our entire lifetime, it is foolish to think that there is a member in either Republican congressional caucus who is going step up and provide the leadership that those of us in the America First movement so desperately desire.

Sadly Trump and Trump alone is the ONLY hope this shell of a republic has left.

It’s all a calibrated effort by both parties. They’re going to keep Trump off the November ballot. My God people didn’t y’all see it coming!! Can you say blackmail with a capital B! The FBI CIA and DOJ know exactly how they’re playing their cards and one by one they are taking out their republican targets. Right now if they take over the house that’s it for Trump. It’s a colluded effort by the Republicans to do this to Trump. They can’t take him out in the legal courts. They’ll take them out by written articles by the rats as the house majority. Pesobic was right all hell is going to break loose before November. And our own republican leaders are our worst enemies! This is becoming a freaking nightmare!
