Republican lawmakers on Saturday demanded the U.S. launch a retaliatory strike against Iran for the drone and missile attacked launched against Israel.
On Saturday, Iran launched hundreds of suicide drones toward Israel and later ballistic missiles in a retaliatory attack for an airstrike on the Iranian consulate building in Syria that killed Tehran’s top commanders.
President Joe Biden vowed prior to the attack to do everything possible to protect Israel. However, aid to Israel amid the country’s war with Hamas has been delayed due to division within the Republican party.
Following the attack, Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) announced the House will move forward next week to consider a bill that will provide Israel with an aid package.
“In light of Iran’s unjustified attack on Israel, the House will move from its previously announced legislative schedule next week to instead consider legislation that supports our ally Israel and holds Iran and its terrorist proxies accountable,” Scalise wrote. “The House of Representatives stands strongly with Israel, and there must be consequences for this unprovoked attack.”

Iran’s leadership is not crazy. Calling them crazy means we can’t understand the logic they see the world by. It’s important that we put ourselves in their shoes so we can predict what they’ll do. Especially when they have nuclear weapons. (If they have enough fissionable material all they have to do is bang two chunks of the right mass together and you get Fat Man and Little Boy.) What they do understand is force. That and sanctions. We’re letting them sell oil to keep the price down. We could sell more oil than they could, but the Democrats won’t allow it. So no sanctions. If we sanctioned them the way we’re sanctioning Russia they’d collapse, and Obama would be mad.

Current US defense budget is @3.5% of GDP. In the 1950s it was in the range of 8-9% of GDP. And, IIRC, procurement was a higher fraction of the budget than these days. Personnel costs have tended to increase, proportionately, relative to procurement. Defense industries have declined, a lot, relative to the general economy.
If you want to examine an influential industry, try medical care.

I think it was Sadam Hussien who displayed one of the exploder devices that surround the hollow sphere during a speech. The US said he couldn’t have that technology and he wanted to show that he had it. In retrospect, a pretty stupid thing to do. So, yes, the technology is obviously available. I’d imagine the machining is a bit touchy as the material is toxic and the sphere has to be perfect. But if the machinist isn’t concerned with having children or living until next Ramadan, I suppose it can be done.
