"Never trust a man who lays his hand on his heart when he assures you of anything," goes the old axiom. That's why I never trust a Democrat who makes any promise ever about a federal agency or program.
Take Medicare. In 1966 when Medicare began, it cost $3 billion. The House Ways and Means Committee estimated that Medicare would cost about $12 billion by 1990. Instead, it cost $107 billion and today costs the government close to a trillion dollars.
So when Joe Biden and the Democrats assured Americans and Republicans in Congress that the $80 billion the president wanted to augment the IRS tax-collecting ability was only going to target "the rich," everyone with two brain cells working knew it was a lie.
It will surprise no one that an audit by the Treasury Inspector General For Tax Administration found that "President Biden's plan to hire a new army of tax collectors is falling flat, and the agents already at work are targeting the middle class."
"As of last summer, 63% of new audits targeted taxpayers with income of less than $200,000," reports the Wall Street Journal. "Only a small overall share reached the very highest earners, while 80% of audits covered filers earning less than $1 million."
Bank robber Willie Sutton supposedly responded to the question of why he robs banks by saying with a shrug, "That's where the money is." So, too, the IRS audits well-off but not "rich" taxpayers because they can't afford the army of tax attorneys that the super-rich can bring to the table.

Meanwhile, I’m a widow. Lost husband suddenly, cardiac death in 2022. I filed married join return for 2022 as allowed. This year had to file single first time in 38 years. E filed 2.10.23. Got a letter from IRS holding my refund to verify my income. I had a reduced income due to loss of spouse. They are questioning my income drop even though the accountant sent his death certificate in 2022 and they can figure out obviously why my income dropped drastically.
But a friend of mine who does taxes had a man come in with W-2 of income of 500.00 for 2023 and he had 8 birth certificates for his 8 children. His refund was 24K. He received it in less then 21 days.
He told me that IRS IS AUDITING even people making 25,000 or less. Well I am the lucky one who is being questioned.
We know what cloth the Biden party is cut from.
To take on millionaires & billionaires (& their tax lawyers) is not only expensive, but takes hi-level accounting knowledge. How could they hire 80k people & have them able to take on such cases quickly? What I’m finding is they’re just passing paperwork around. My sweetie died in 2022. He passed in February, so there were 2 months of income to report in 2023. A VERY simple tax form (pension, social security & some interest on a bank account) & he was due a refund. I filed them with the Utah office (as required). I still haven’t received the refund to his estate, & I’ve received letters from the Atlanta IRS office, the Austin IRS office, the Pittsburgh IRS office & the Fresno IRS office - most of them saying they need more time to solve my “issue.” The last one said they couldn’t find the return & I had to resubmit. Ridiculous!

The new reportable transaction level is $600.00. Who did you think they were going after? The threshhold is so low that the enforcement needed more stooges to do the work and what is interesting they are having trouble even getting people to apply. I guess a possible toxic work environment is not were people want to be.
“
It’s $5000 this year, and $500 next year.
new and improved way of mass murder. Injections
They WILL have that list!

Looks like they’re going after anyone (except rich people) who had a drastic change in income.... .
I bet they wouldn’t question your return if you voted for Bi-Dung. That guy with the 8 kids no doubt votes Demonrat.
I had a similar situation under the Clintoon administration.
They questioned my filing status the year after my divorce.
Very sorry for your loss.
“As a side note, the man was a rabid democrat that advocated loudly for higher taxes.”
so no audit for him then.
The IRS has so far refused to process my deceased dad’s 2020 return because they claim he died prior to 2020. He actually died in 2021. I think I got that cleared by sending them a copy of the death certificate... The next holdup is that they want a copy of the 1099-R showing a $265 withholding, because the info on the transcript they supplied isn’t good enough.
Yes, that’s right, even though their 1099 transcript shows the 1099-R with $265 withholding, they want a copy of the actual 1099-R, so I’ve been trying to get the issuer (a major bank) to send it. 3 calls so far and it still hasn’t been sent though twice now they said it would be sent.
The refund due on that 2020 return is around $20k....
It’s almost like they’re operating with a directive to hold up processing any return with a refund as long as they can.
Colored me surprised
DIE hires all.
The sun rises and sets. Democrats lie. It’s the way of things. But also notice that the GOP didn’t remove the funding for the 80,000 new IRS agents.
Instead, they only removed only a small part of it, and then bragged about it!
Pathetic.
My financial planner who's also a CPA, Certified Financial Planner, etc.. flat-out told me last week that the #1 target for the IRS is single males making $250k/year or more.
That's people like me.
In the past 5 years, I've been subject to IRS "mistakes" that triggered audits.
In one case, the IRS sent me a bill for $103k in taxes on the sale of my previous home. A tax bill of $103k on a home that sold for $300k, which I lived in for 30 years AND due to someone at the IRS fat-fingering something, triggered an audit. Under IRS rules, None of that was taxable.
The other case was their failure to properly record taxes paid and reported, triggering another audit with a demand for $57k. Once again, IRS "mistake".
I don't see how another 80,000 agents gets justified with mistakes like this. In fact, they'll probably get WORSE! I frankly think that the IRS makes these "mistakes" intentionally to trigger audits.
And when (if) you do get the 20K...you should also get Interest
Dems. If they’re talking, they’re lying.

Last week Mrs. Sooner and I were visiting with out new accountant. I asked her about this very thing and she first blew it off as a political question, then asserted that they’re going after old, outstanding tax debt.
Driving home, I told my wife that I just don’t trust this new person the way I trusted Pam, her predecessor, who is no longer available to us.
then she is totally clueless and I would run for the hills from her!
