Police in the northern German port city of Kiel on Friday said they had discovered counterfeit cash worth more than $103 million.
Officials think the haul of low-quality forgeries was part of a wider shipment operation for falsified bills from Turkey, through Germany, to the United States.
How did police find the counterfeit notes?
Investigators tracked the company locations of a suspect after US security authorities tipped off German federal police.
State police in Schleswig-Holstein said they conducted "extensive searches" of an apartment and two company addresses, in both Schleswig-Holstein and neighboring Hamburg.
Officers discovered and seized four pallets containing a total of 75 boxes of counterfeit US dollars.
Investigators say they believe the banknotes came from a wholesaler from Turkey. The trader allegedly used one of the accused's export companies in the Schleswig-Holstein town of Jübek as an interim storage facility for onward transport to the US.
A 42-year-old suspect, who has until now not been in custody due to a lack of evidence, is being investigated over counterfeiting charges. He is the managing director of two export firms and is suspected of having previously exported forged money across the Atlantic.

I’m guessing that they are calling them “$100 bills” because that is what is printed on the front. They appear to be fake gag/practical joke notes— looking real enough from a distance, but once you pick it up and look at both sides, would see it was obviously fake.

A US bill on legal printing stock weighs about a gram. They claim $1.3 million in 75 boxes...about $1.25 million per box. That’d be 12,500 bills, if they use the $100 denomination. 12 and a half kilos a box?

They claim $103 million, not $1.3 million, for one thing, but that’s just a typo. Second, it would work out to 13.7 kilograms per box with $100 bills, which is quite reasonable. Reasonable for $100 bills, not $1 bills as everyone keeps going on about.
If you mean the photo posted in comment #2, I can’t; it doesn’t open. Unless you’re referring to the picture in the DW link at the top, just below the headline, which states that it’s a photo of real $100 bills with the ends turned up.

It would be a real hoot watching Zelensky holding every one of them on each pallet sent to him by Joe Pedo up to the light to look for the “strip”.
I didn’t immediately get the reference. But after some research, I see this is a scene from a very successful film called Napoleon Dynamite. My interest is piqued. I’m now going to have to watch it. Thanks.
