Why are millions of people traveling to see darkness? Can’t they just wait for the sun to go down?

I’m lucky enough to be in a place that had the eclipse in ‘17 as well as the one on Monday. Totality is almost surreal. As the moon covers more of the sun, high in the sky, it naturally gets darker and darker. And then for a few minutes the sun is completely covered by the moon. The bright corona surrounding a dark disk, kind of like what you might imagine a black hole to look like.

The thing that surprised me most was the sound of night insects starting as ‘night’ fell in the middle of the day. Then a bit of the sun appeared and the night sounds ended as abruptly as the began and it became lighter and lighter.

I’ve been in the shadow of the moon twice and am looking forward to a third time. If you are close to the line of totality it is worth the trip.

I’ve been told my whole life that every eclipse is the last one I’ll ever see. I’m not going a mile out of my way to see a few confused birds and gaia worshipers

The yellow line on the map passes over my house. I am not sure if I am getting too old but I feel about zero excitement about the eclipse. I will highly likely just be at my desk working as it passes over.
