LIVERMORE, Calif. -- Most fast food workers in California will be paid at least $20 an hour beginning Monday when a new law is scheduled to kick in giving more financial security to an historically low-paying profession while threatening to raise prices in a state already known for its high cost of living.
Democrats in the state Legislature passed the law last year in part as an acknowledgement that many of the more than 500,000 people who work in fast food restaurants are not teenagers earning some spending money, but adults working to support their families.
That includes immigrants like Ingrid Vilorio, who said she started working at a McDonald's shortly after arriving in the United States in 2019. Fast food was her full-time job until last year. Now, she works about eight hours per week at a Jack in the Box while working other jobs.
“The $20 raise is great. I wish this would have come sooner,” Vilorio said through a translator. “Because I would not have been looking for so many other jobs in different places.”
The law was supported by the trade association representing fast food franchise owners. But since it passed, many franchise owners have bemoaned the impact the law is having on them, especially during California's slowing economy.

Ingrid Vilorio is soon going to be making zero per hour. McDonalds used to be great places for hard working, ambitious people to start a career. Lots so young kids got their first job experience working at McDonalds. The entry level wages were low so turn over was rapid. Upper level jobs actually were well paying. That meant rapid advancement Growing up, the people working in fast food were largely high school or college age kids with their first jobs, often to work their way through school. Saw the change in California with all the illegal immigrants so you had people in their 30s to 50s working as a career.
Who cares what you want to eat.
NOT surprising for someone like me who has done accounting for over 66 years.

The choice between a Big Mac meal out at McDonalds or a T-Bone o a Ribeye steak cooked at home is a very easy call.
not to mention the health effects. you just know somewhere a group of meat haters got together and made a plan to get rid of all of those unhealthy fast food places that serve meat. well they did it. Henry Ford had the wisdom to price his cars so the everyday, ordinary man could afford to buy one. with fast food, only the rich will be able to buy a burger and fries and the fast food employees won’t even be able to afford the products they make BUT they will be healthier for it.. the worst part for the future former employees... rich people don’t eat fast food. except President Donald J Trump. but he’s already rich and can afford it.
My wife and I got a quick meal at Captain D’s a couple days ago.
Today, I purchased a very filling shrimp meal for my family of 4 to celebrate Easter. We bought it at a local restaurant. It came with corn on the cob and potatoes.
It cost 8 dollars more for that huge shrimp feast.

I actually don’t blame her much. In the old days, immigrants had to learn English to navigate their way around. So they went to English classes, and practiced their new language at home.
Now darn near everything is in multiple languages. Why bother learning English?
Balkanization is a very dangerous thing. And that’s exactly what our government is promoting.
As a Luddite I had never ventured inside McDonald’s to know it was assumed you had to do a kiosk order and you already knew all about it. My one time there was unsettling. I felt like Roddy McDowall as HG Wells in Time After Time (good movie).*
Kindly customer behind me told me I had to choose a seating area booth even if I wasn’t sure. Mandatory line froze up the screen unless I agreed.
Like most computer choices it assumed you already knew choosing the drink without the size meant you weren’t locked into that as a new menu would appear later for the sizes. Stuff like that.
Finally I didn’t properly confirm the order choices and thought I was done could pay later at the pickup counter. No dice. No order was silently being processed unless I confirmed the order on a bottom line I missed seeing. Had to complete the order and start the wait anew.
*HG Wells suddenly in current US bewildered and shaking his head at the newspaper sports headline Rams Maul Bucks.
The thing is this is not limited to fast food workers.
If they are worth $20/hr. the Carpenters apprentice won’t work for $20 and if the apprentice gets a raise the folks that do the $25/hour jobs will want more too. It will spread the costs all up “the food chain” to every higher skilled worker. Needless to say, inflation will skyrocket.
Interestingly enough…that’s how Ray Kroc discovered McD’s - standing in line to the brother’s burger stand.

Yep, either that or more likely they will all close down. Some people need to learn the hard way when it comes to basic common sense. Why $20? Why not $2000 a hour? It will have the same effect.
