Maryland governor calls for ‘full accountability’ in bridge collapse

Maryland Governor Wes Moore (D) on Wednesday called for “full accountability” following the collapse of the Francis Key Scott Bridge in Baltimore that left six people presumed dead.

Moore said on CNN there “needs to be a full and thorough investigation.”

“What led up to this? What made the ship lose power? What made them lose the ability to be ability to steer the ship? Do we have the right infrastructure that’s in place to be able to protect the people of our state,” he said. “So I think there needs to be a full reckoning, a full accountability, and I think we need to go wherever the investigation takes us to make sure that the people of our jurisdictions are safe.”

You could be almost certain. There will be some kind of fake narrative in which Trump cut some useless program, that will be spun to read that if only he had not cut that program, this tragedy would’ve been averted. It might take a little time, but it is coming.

And, of course, the media propagandists will accept it without question.

I was discussing this with a friend yesterday, and when I mentioned incompetency as a possible contributing or root cause, he took issue with it and became somewhat combative.

I had to explain that incompetency can be extremely broad, and covers everything from someone who is incompetent because they didn’t receive the appropriate training and drilling on a particular malfunction, to the people who simply gun-decked the training (signed off without checking for competency), poor training, poor administration, poor maintenance, that rabbit hole just goes on and on.

I view a single minute spent on diversity training, when it wasn’t spent on a minute of actual real training as massive incompetence, in the same way I view any company that operates on DEI principles in hiring and promotion as practicing unforgivable incompetence.

And, as we have seen, incompetency is just as destructive as terrorism, and in today’s day and age, even worse, because you can combat terrorism.

But if the laws are made to promote incompetency, it cannot be fought.

A 50-year-old steel bridge is due for replacement. Getting the ship to hit the bridge means that Marsk now has to foot that bill.

Well, Brandon said the Feds would be picking up the tab, but I don’t think the Constitution gives him the power to do it unilaterally.

I have no doubt that FedGov will be paying for a lot, but the legal aspects of all of this are delightfully complex. A ship, owned by a Singapore company, leased to a Danish company, flying the Singapore flag, crewed by Indian nationals, captained by a Ukrainian, piloted by Americans, insured by I don’t know who, takes down a bridge carrying an interstate highway blocking off an U.S./MD port.

Who or what body of law determines liability? I’m pretty sure that lawyers will be earning fees on this for a long time.

Right. It’s best to wait vs. wild speculation.

And... speaking of impartial investigations.... what good is an “impartial investigation” done by a government that lies about everything it has already told you?

I’m still wondering about several of the “results” from said investigations of past events. Results that were never released. Or... was it just that the impartial investigation was never really done..(oops)..?

Just keep in mind that a container ship of the size of the Dali, moving at speed, would take down fenders, revetments, without an awful lot of engineering work. This was a very big ship with a lot of momentum.

According to experts, the Francis Scott Key Bridge, constructed in 1977, did not incorporate fenders or protection cells, technologies that became common in the 1980s following similar accidents.

Experts estimate that implementing these necessary fenders on the bridge would have cost around $3 million. In contrast, the bridge's failure has led to an estimated loss of $15 million per day in economic activities, coupled with $1.5 million daily losses in state and local revenues, the Daily Mail report said.

The collapse has not only resulted in an estimated $15 million daily economic loss but also presumed casualties, with six men reported missing. The incident has highlighted the stark contrast between the potential prevention costs and the devastating consequences of inaction.
So maybe the investigation will identify which political officials, over the years, blocked or voted against installing the protective fenders around the Key Bridge piers. (\sarc)
