You weren’t there.

So you know absolutely nothing.

As for me being the captain of a container ship, no. But more importantly I’ll wager a weeks salary you haven’t been one either.

“Deck hand goes to the bridge in the middle of the night...”

Terrorists plan for maximum casualties, not middle of the night when bridge traffic is at its lowest.

Most accidents happen unexpectedly.

My company imports plywood, OSB and lumber through the port of Baltimore.
This is because they are one of the few ports that have large indoor storage warehouses at the port.

All of that cargo will need to be diverted to a different port like Wilmington, Philly, Norfolk, Newark, New Haven, Charleston, Savannah, etc.
Costing more freight to get to its final destination.

This is a classic FORCE MAJURE. An act of God, out of our control.

I am fully qualified in naval ship handling. I am not going to post my service record.

If A PROPER SEA AND ANCHOR DETAIL IS SET IT TAKES 1 SECOND TO DROP ANCHOR.

I went through full trianing and qualifred as OOD. There was no reason for this accident. That ship lost control way before nearing that bridge and a lot of things could have been done. Once it looked like the ship was off course approaching that bridge support emergency action should have been taken.

No tugs either. That felt strange too. You could drop anchors on a ship that size and its no guarantee your hooks will hold the ship with enough way on. No fenders around the caissons either. That makes no sense.

Too bad we can’t have logical people like you in charge. Instead we have a bunch of nitwits that will use this for political gain and the media will help them!

My employer too. The plant is just a couple miles from the bridge. Many of the raw materials simply do not exist in the US and thus importing is necessary. Force majeure is right.

In addition, the ports where material is already called ready and released have stated that this will create a traffic nightmare. So, be prepared for extended transit times of trucks going in and out of the Baltimore area. Meaning, it is going to cost more.

I’d have crane ships and demo guys already underway to clear the debris. I’d also have people calling every ferry company in America and globally to arrange leases of 2-3 large ferry vessels. Temporary wharves can be set up by the Army Corps of Engineers to move some traffic and take up the slack.

Agree.

I would have work barges and cranes over the marine lane and clear the lane within these next few weeks - completed before end of April.

Thus restoring the lane, and then use tugs to guide/manage passage of ships thru the lane.
