WASHINGTON—The Senate missed its midnight deadline to approve a $1.2 trillion package funding federal agencies but passed the measure in the early hours of Saturday morning, averting a government shutdown.
The passage of the measure in a 74 to 24 vote wrapped up months of drama in Congress that centered on conservatives’ demands for deeper spending cuts, completing work on funding the government through the end of the fiscal year in September. The measure, which passed the House on Friday, now goes to President Biden for his signature.
“It’s been a long day, a long week, a very long few months, but tonight we have funded the government,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.).
The Senate vote went ahead after Democrats and Republicans reached an agreement over GOP amendment votes related to contentious issues including immigration policy, all of which then failed. While some parts of the federal government, including the Defense Department, experienced a very brief lapse in funding after 12:01 a.m. Saturday, the White House Office of Management and Budget said it has ended shutdown preparations and agencies would continue normal operations.

I hope they got more than just FAILED amendments.
Hate that kind of "deal", it's really No Deal!
Only Trump had the strength to stand up to them. That is why he is being savaged.
nothing like holding out for so long and then caving deeply. Good way to destroy the republican party
The country must be put back on a Budget by law , congress is nothing but a bunch of Spendthrifts
Trump signed an over $4T increase.
The problem is that it's the spendthrifts who would have to pass that law.

In other words, the spend-a-thon continues.
Get ready for higher taxes on top of higher inflation.

Gotta keep buying votes don’t you know. That’s what our democracy has turned into.
He got some concessions out of them.
Exactly. Many here point out that we are a Republic and we are, but we use a democratic process to elect our leaders. The results are the same. Eventually, people learn they can vote themselves money, and this is what we get.
As someone once said, democracy is when two wolves and a sheep vote on what's for dinner.
“ The country must be put back on a Budget by law , congress is nothing but a bunch of Spendthrifts”
We are no longer a nation of laws. That ship sailed in 2008.
Blackmail is very effective. What else explains this bastardized Congress?

So true self made , truly cares about all, talks like a normal person. Brusque yes but on point instead of weasel language.
Big challenge with Rino’s. They only care about $$$ for themselves
It’s for the pee-pole.
We are a republic in name only. What we have become is a full blown kleptocracy.
You're right again. That would be a great tagline.
I wish some certain of anti-constitutional arugment could be made. Then taken to USSC and these kind of spending vehicles be struck down as unconstitutional.
I think the claim of blackmail is overstated. The reason these type of bad budget bills exist is because these politicians have to hand out bundles of money to their supporters back in their states and districts. If they don’t do that there will be another politician who will and he\she will replace them.
Also, don’t fool yourself everyone** back in the state or district wants access to the taxpayer trough!
everyone** - voting majority. If this voting majority didn’t exist it wouldn’t be happening. In many ways we the voter are as much of the problem as the career politician.
Repeal the 17th Amendment!
State legislatures can’t do worse!
Term limits for the House!
