California has a program which searches computer databases as a way to find people who have been made into prohibited possessors, often without their knowledge.

Because guns are registered in California, they know who has possession of them.

They did not say the guns were illegal. This may indicate the very wealthy person who owned these guns believed he was complying with the law.

It will be interesting to see the details of this case.
