Former Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi has won a closely watched special election for a vacant House seat once held by former Republican Rep. George Santos, who was expelled from the chamber in December.
The Associated Press projected that Suozzi would defeat Republican county lawmaker Mazi Pilip, to win back his old job.
With the GOP hanging on to a razor-thin majority in the House, national Republicans and Democrats poured big bucks into a race in suburban New York City where immigration and border security, crime, and abortion were the top issues, and where the election was seen as a bellwether ahead of the all-but-certain November White House rematch between President Biden and former President Donald Trump. The Long Island district held for a decade by Democrats was flipped by Santos in the 2022 midterms. But Santos was kicked out of Congress less than a year into his tenure, after he was exposed for lying about his background and indicted for a slew of financial crimes.
Suozzi, who represented the district for six years before running unsuccessfully for governor, repeatedly tied Pilip to Santos, as well as to former President Donald Trump.
"Who knows what she really stands for? She's George Santos 2.0. It's the exact same nontransparent, phony baloney, just trying to get votes instead of saying what you really think," Suozzi charged on the eve of the election.
And Suozzi, a former mayor and county executive, argued that Pilip - who is in her second term as a county lawmaker - "is a far-right wing extremist" who is "totally in line with Mike Johnson and Donald Trump ."

I find this hard to believe, but I didn’t follow the campaign. IMHO it ought to have been an easy win, given how the immigration catastrophe is screwing up NYC and the Island.

What do I think? It sucks, Republicans put up a loser, chose poorly. Now we all suffer.
Between Santos embarassing Republicans in the district, Trump making a fool of himself repeatedly this week, and a snowstorm suppressing turnout, I am not surprised that Tom Suozzi won. I just hope it was closer than a 10-point race. Republicans in NY State and nation-wide should pay attention.
Who were the RNC morons who recruited and failed to vet Santos in the first place?
Was anyone allowed to vote or was this just for registered dems and repubs?

The Dems will take back the house this year thanks to scum like Gaetz, Buck etc.
While Johnson is a decent guy, he lacks the deep pockets and fund raising ability to compete.
Gaetz did the right thing. Kevin McCarthy isn't even here today. If he's a man with principles, he would have served until the end of his term. But he is not even doing that. Gaetz called him out. And I'm glad that he did that.
Kevin McCarthy was an imposter the whole time. He pretended he was on our team while he was cutting deals with Joe Biden.
Gaetz had a personal vendetta against McCarthy bc he didn’t scuttle an ethics investigation into him. So, he got him thrown out. McCarthy left his seat. Johnson is about the same, but now we’re down a seat. This party is a mix of schoolgirls and Democrat appeasing baboons.
