Putin's Chances of Winning Ukraine War Look Bright
Newsweek ^ | Jan 14, 2024 | Brendan Cole

Posted on 02/05/2024 6:19:15 PM PST by MinorityRepublican

Three scenarios for the war started by Vladimir Putin in Ukraine are envisaged by Philip Breedlove, the former Supreme Allied Commander Europe—and two of them involve a Russian victory.

"If we don't do anything different than we're doing now, eventually, Ukraine will lose because Russia has more people and depth than Ukraine does," he told Newsweek.

"If the West abandons Ukraine, it will fight valiantly but tens of thousands of more Ukrainians will die and eventually Russia will subjugate all of Ukraine which will once again be a Russian vassal."

But one path offers hope for Ukraine, according to Breedlove, who as NATO commander between 2013 and 2016 witnessed the consequences of Putin's annexation of Crimea in 2014 that preceded his full-scale invasion.

"If the West chooses to give Ukraine what they need to win, Ukraine will win this war," the four-star general said. "This war is going to end exactly how Western policymakers want and desire it to end."

That need for more western weapons informed Volodymr Zelensky's exasperated plea this week that the fight against Putin is not just Kyiv's. "He's not going to stop until we all finish him off together," the Ukrainian president said on Thursday.

What do balloons tied to trees and tanks have to do with Russia winning?

If Russia really was a superpower, it would have been over. Maybe not in two weeks, but at most two months.

You could say the same thing about USA. But we lost Vietnam and Afghanistan.

So, right now, there is a law on the books that Biden can use to immediately suspend the illegals coming across our border. We don’t need any new law superceding existing law, Senators.

Don't need any more money, either. The whole Ukraine vs. Southern Border $$$ meme is horse hockey, promoted by the pro-Moscow media brigades to fool the American public.

The outcome was never in doubt.
The only variable was how much graft Ukraine was going to get to keep Biden’s name out of the Burisma investigations, and how much illegal appropriations of tax dollars by US defense contractors.
Putin was ALWAYS going to prevail in Ukraine, just a matter of time.

If my memory is still correct, Putin and The Potato physically met twice, before Potato shut down the embassies and announced when he wanted the attacks to begin.

Maybe they both agreed that The Potato’s illegal term would be the time allotted for both to run amok. Potato obviously agreed that Putin would be paid in energy prices.

The Russians can cover both tanks and the cheapest used cars in Russia with balloons, plywood or hay and they will look the same to the smartest American toys Biden and Congress can give away.

LOL!

You win the Internet for today!

Fair enough, but there is a difference.

We did not lose due a lack of military capability but rather due to a lack of political will. Same thing is happening with Iran.

To anyone so ignorant as to not know history -- which of course does not include most Freepers and you MinorityRepublican -- we could have crushed/could crush any opponent.

Russia's issue is different -- they just don't have the military power to win.

To add:

Russia's issue is different -- they just don't have the military power to win.

Russia's problems are bolstered up military might for propaganda purposes, massive corruption, no trained NCO corps (the backbone of any military force in the field), complete failure of logistics, failure to maintain equipment, horrible and often brutal training of conscripts, and a few other things.

Now Ukraine suffers from a lot of that, too, but people fighting for their homes and families tend to beat even somewhat superior forces. Again, history...

Corruption is a big problem in Ukraine. But they were making progress because they are getting closer to the West after centuries of Russian domination.

Excellent points. Sadly, corruption (and wokeness and a lot of other bad things) also infests a lot of the West including the US.

But again excellent points. Acknowledge Ukraine was at least trying to make progress.

$200 billion from Biden to Ukraine in under two years. Wish he cared half as much about the U.S.’s borders as he does Ukraine’s.

With 10% going into the big guy's Swiss bank accounts, the Ukraine borders pay a lot better ...

Why did the proud Poles fail to defend Polska in 1939?

Why did the French fail to defend the Great Republic in 1940?

Why did the Germans fail to defend the Fatherland in 1945?

Yeah. Not so sure about right now. Zelensky was great in 2022. But it appears that Zelensky may turn into a despot, especially if he fires Valerii Zaluzhnyi as the Commander in Chief and refuses to hold new elections anytime soon.

Just a side note.

This is part of what makes Free Republic such an excellent site: Diversity of thought. Respectful discourse. The willingness to acknowledge good points made by others. Sometimes people here admit when they are wrong. (I’ve been corrected many times, and more than a few times admitted I was wrong.) Incredible knowledge ranging from history to the Constitution to math/physics etc.

Oh and the mods do ZOT true trolls. Always fun!

I pose as a leftist on some leftist sites under another pseudonym. I find on those sites the more irrationally stupid positions I take, the more I’m applauded. Even slight disagreement has gotten me banned a few times.

IOW thanks for the discourse.
