Student-debt relief through a reform to the SAVE plan is coming in February.
Those who originally borrowed $12,000 or less and made at least 10 years of payments could see relief.
Borrowers not enrolled in the SAVE plan will need to do so to make use of the benefit.
More student-loan borrowers can expect debt relief starting this month through a new repayment reform.
In early January, the Education Department announced that borrowers enrolled in the SAVE income-driven repayment plan who originally borrowed $12,000 or less would begin to see their loans forgiven in February if they made at least 10 years of qualifying payments.

More vote buying in an election year.
I can’t figure out how this is legal.
Where’s my mortgage forgiveness loan?
I never had student loan. I’m a 53 year old, widowed (supporting 3 kids & my dad), service connected disabled Navy veteran.
Where’s MY money?
It’s not, but that’s not the important question
Paid mine off years and years ago....but...I want the money back, with interest...LOL
My kid busted his tail to pay off $30,000 in a year. (That’s what happens when you earn a degree that pays well)
Where’s his money?
The slave serving company loan store is taking care of you..
Even former students who are obligated to pay, aren't, because they expect forgiveness sometime in the future.
That’s true. So why did a 50 year old with an MBA give it to them?
“..I can’t figure out how this is legal....”
It isn’t, but that’s never stopped a vote-buying democrat!!!!
Is he white?
What I can’t quite understand is if a borrower has made timely payments for 10 years or more on $12,000 or less, why can’t that person continue making payments on what principal is left?
Me too. My wife and I paid off our student loans back in the Eighties. Is this deal retroactive? Are we going to checks? I better go check my mailbox. Thanks Joe, you got my vote!
There weren’t nearly as many useless degrees in higher ed in the 80s as there are now, or even 10 years after your schooling time.
Now you see there's a bunch of folks like Claudine Gay. That's why tuition is so high. If the government pays off the loans, the gravy train continues.
Very true, my wife and I earned our degrees in Computer Science.

Nothing has to be "legal" if you're a Democrat or a Democrat voter. It just has to "feel right."
That’s my point.
I know, and I’m not REALLY asking for mortgage forgiveness. I signed the loan, I’ll pay it back.
But - 20-somethings whining they can’t buy a house sure signed up for the 4 year party at a university or college, didn’t they?
At 17, I had my parents sign the papers so I could join the Navy after I graduated, had a rate all guaranteed (CTT), and shipped out to boot camp a few months after I graduated. I had a car, and paid the loan off myself.
