About That Mysterious AI Breakthrough Known As Q*
Oh no, not this guy again!
To: All
Here's an interesting podcast for those interested in this subject. The person being interviewed is Mitch Randall, Chief Science Officer, Ascendant AI, and a research team member of Harvard's Galileo Project.

Heheh. No, this is the original Q's mechanical brain, hence the asterisk.
On a serious note, the subject of this discussion is that the laboratory versions of publically known chatbots are significantly more advanced, of course, and have made some kind of breakthrough.
No one directly involved will talk about it, but rumors abound...and leaks.

What is in the lab, to my knowledge, is amachine that has elements of self programming.

Yep.
What Mitch Randall (see interview link upthread) says is that some of the scientists working on these advanced AI lab projects don't understand what is going on with this self-programming. In other words, it seems to have taken on a life of its own.
Randall says that we have already entered the early stages of the "singularity."

This is the theory. AI would reach a point that it could rewrite its own code to make itself more intelligent, and then the next generation of AI would do the same, until a super AI is formed. I think the author is implying this is what's happening in practice.
To: RoosterRedux
AI is phony. AI is software. Software can only repeat what is data imprinted. AI is a lie.

Does this breakthrough consist of programming alone, or does it also involve quantum or neural circuitry or some other advance in hardware?

Gee. Who to believe. Scientists who are actually working on AI or closed-minded Freepers who know nothing about it.
I am conflicted.
BTW, I wonder if closed-minded Freepers realize that critical thinking and the scientific method are both impossible without open-mindedness.

No one with direct knowledge is talking about it...yet.
This was part of the big to-do with Sam Altman's firing and quick re-hiring last week.

Please remain conflicted. AI can only attain output from that which is input. Simple fact. Please show me otherwise.

AFAIK, OpenAI is very much more functional than Wikipedia but has the same basic strengths and weaknesses as wiki. It is a fabulous resource for non-controversial topics and information. For anything else, it is basically worthless. Ask it any kind of a question on any sort of a controversial topic, and all you will get is Artificial Indoctrination.
OpenAI is not capable of being persuaded by evidence to change an opinion or estimation.

Yay! Agreed. There is no such thing as artificial intelligence. Garbage in/Garbage out is still the rule. Perhaps groups like the WEF just want something to blame when some thing their experimenting on goes terribly wrong in the lab.
This continual practice of outsourcing, everything to India for IT need scapegoat as well when things go wrong in tech. AI about as real as climate change.
To: no-to-illegals
Please show me otherwise.Yeah, right. Like I have time to waste on closed-minded people.
It's funny that we conservatives talk about how schools are no longer teaching kids critical thinking skills, but we have MANY people right here on FR can refuse to use critical thinking. Their minds are slammed shut and they refuse to think.
If you want to learn what's going on in AI, start studying the subject. There's more to it than you might realize.
I don't know if you are into math, but here's an AI math site that is pretty incredible at solving any formula you can throw at it. Give it a try. There's no programmer behind it that has already pre-solved every problem in the universe.

Software can only repeat what is data imprinted.
That's so five years ago. Current AI is designed like the neural nodes in an animal brain, which improves through trial and error, rewards, and "reinforcement learning." It's the same process as your dog learning that he can earn a treat if he sits when told. A programmer did not program Alpha Zero to play perfect chess, Alpha Zero taught itself how to play perfect chess.
To: snippy_about_it
There are programmers right here on FR who say that the daily work of every programmer they know has already changed significantly by using AI to help do their jobs. As an investor, I do security analysis on Excel and AI has cut my time developing new VBA programs from days to a matter of hours.
It's funny that people with the most negative opinions haven't actually used AI in their daily lives.
Reminds me of the Dunning-Kruger effect.

I think (therefore I am not AI) that AI is the ultimate form of socialism. Rather than an individual striving to develop the mind and creativity, it is done by AI. The individual loses out on self-improvement and self-development. While AI may bring a certain appearance of productivity through the ease of clicking up new products, his own creativity and critical thinking processes dwindle.
