I do not agree with that.
You go to college to gain mastery of a specific field of knowledge, because you think that doing so will benefit you. Following that, we proceed toward a sort of agreement, to wit: If you don't know what specific field of knowledge you wish to master, you shouldn't be in college.
Very few people I have met in the course of my science/engineering career had their specific job in mind when they began (or even completed) their bachelor's degree. My career has been a long strange trip that I would never have predicted back in my "auld college days". Without the foundation of that bachelor's degree, though, the long strange trip would never have begun.
The objective is to learn how to think, and develop a good BS meter.
Maybe only 10 to 20 % of our colleges are worth saving, and some of those need to remove their vile left wing so called professors!
It's white supremacist, of course, because people from east Asian ethnic background performed best on those tests ...
We are saying the same thing just different ways.
You should know you have an interest in being an engineer, you don’t need to know exactly what type.
But if you don’t have the slightest idea what you might want to do in life and just go borrow money to enroll in college and then take some useless major that wont help you in the slightest because it is “easy” and will allow you time to party. That is going to have a bad ending.
You can accomplish that by housing Palestinian refugees at these universities, then circle the perimeter with armed guards and concertina wire.
No state is going to give up its state supported universities even if it’s only to keep the football and basketball teams going.
Hiring a lefist radical, schooled in protest and disrespect for authority, private property and ‘workers’ rights’ is just asking for trouble. They will immediately begin sowing their learned hate and discontent among your employees like a cancerous tumor. .............What could possibly go wrong?>.🤦‍♂️ ...............
This produces a useful education if and only if the "major" field of study is inherently legitimate.

That’s what over 50% of college\university students do!
The schools count on that for their financial bottom line.

It seems to me, at this point, that any disagreement between us is insignificant, and best aired over pizza and beer ...

I chose the first outcome, my parents didn’t have to pay a dime.

If you're talking a Masters Degree or PHd, I agree. But the purpose of undergraduate education is to learn how to think.
I think it would take an EMP to end universities...and they will have brought it on themselves, and all of us.
If all I had learned while earning my Bachelor of Science degree in Physics was “how to think”, I would have been robbed of 4 years’ tuition.
One declares a “major”, and pursues it, for good reason.
I posit the following:
1) One who completes a Bachelor’s Degree without having learned how to think has been robbed of 4 years’ tuition.
2) One who completes a Bachelor’s Degree ONLY having learned how to think has been robbed of 4 years’ tuition.
“””But if you don’t have the slightest idea what you might want to do in life and just go borrow money to enroll in college and then take some useless major that wont help you in the slightest because it is “easy” and will allow you time to party.”””
I graduated from college many decades ago and I still remember some of my fellow students who focused their education on classes that were easy. Whereas, most of my fellow students were going to college in order to get a better job than a high graduate would get.
Fast forward to today and it is my belief that courses like gender studies are deemed by the students as a degree where the course work is ‘easy’ and where they can get an ‘A’ grade. Hence, that is why these worthless degrees like gender studies are so popular.
sorry for the typo:
