Lionsgate and Apple Pull Ads From X Amid Reported Rise in Antisemitic Speech
The Hollywood Reporter ^ | NOVEMBER 17, 2023 | Alex Welprin

The studio is pulling ads as its 'Hunger Games' prequel hits theaters, while major advertisers Apple and IBM are also backing away from the platform.

Major advertisers are pausing their ad campaigns on Elon Musk’s social media platform X.

The film studio Lionsgate said Thursday that it would be pulling its ads from the platform, just as its Hunger Games prequel is hitting movie theaters.

A spokesperson for Lionsgate confirmed the decision Friday. This follows in the wake of companies such as IBM and Apple pulling ads from the platform, in light of a new report from nonprofit Media Matters for America Thursday, which found that the platform was placing ads for companies such as “Apple, Bravo (NBCUniversal), IBM, Oracle, and Xfinity (Comcast) next to content that touts Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party.”

“IBM has zero tolerance for hate speech and discrimination and we have immediately suspended all advertising on X while we investigate this entirely unacceptable situation,” the company said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

Axios reported that Apple was pausing its ad buys on the platform on Friday afternoon.

These decisions also come after a post from Musk Wednesday that many have called out as being antisemitic.

Musk replied to another user on X, formerly known as Twitter, Wednesday, who said “I’m deeply disinterested in giving the tiniest shit now about western Jewish populations coming to the disturbing realization that those hordes of minorities that support flooding their country don’t exactly like them too much.” In response, Musk said “you have said the actual truth.”

The White House has also come out against the reported proliferation of antisemitic content on the platform, saying in a statement Friday: “We condemn this abhorrent promotion of antisemitic and racist hate in the strongest terms, which runs against our core values as Americans.”

X CEO Linda Yaccarino, who has been trying to win advertisers back to the platform, defended the company’s position in a tweet Thursday saying: “X’s point of view has always been very clear that discrimination by everyone should STOP across the board — I think that’s something we can and should all agree on. When it comes to this platform — X has also been extremely clear about our efforts to combat antisemitism and discrimination. There’s no place for it anywhere in the world — it’s ugly and wrong. Full stop.”

Yaccarino, who previously led the advertising divisions at NBCUniversal and Turner Broadcasting, joined X (back when it was called Twitter) earlier this year as its CEO. Musk stayed on to lead its product and technology, though it has been his public comments on the platform that seem to have become an issue with marketers.

While Musk has outlined a vision in which X becomes an “everything app,” with dating services, live video, financial transactions and other offerings, the company remains heavily reliant on advertising revenue, so the departure of major marketers is likely to only intensify pressure on the company’s finances.

I guess anti-Semitism on TikTok and college campuses are okay.

I just don’t see the sense in tying business advertising to political speech. The only explanation is extremely thin skin on all concerned, whether seller or buyer.

Interesting that not a one of them are upset or concerned about rampant anti -White, anti-Christian or anti-West rhetoric or ‘hate speech’

The companies involved are part of the CIA complex or cabal or whatever term you like. This is not about business, it's war by other means, against Musk.

"... in light of a new report from nonprofit Media Matters for America Thursday"

Oh, Media Matters -- that bastion of truth and objectivity...

I read the the posting that Musk replied to, as well as his actual response, and can't say that I totally understand what this is all about.

Thank you, JustaTech.

Until the Political Right learns how to communicate with simple sentences and one syllable words, we will continue to surrender without throwing a punch.

Did “the white house” condemn the Osama Bin Laden video being promoted by Xi during his visit. Pure coincidence right?

I wonder when the memo went out instructing big corporate advertisers to dump X.

The followup will be an orchestrated campaign against corporations that still advertise on X. The argument will be made that “responsible” companies have severed ties and that those that haven’t should be sanctioned. It will turn into an half-point attack overnight.

I don’t understand how this is antisemitic. All the poster said (rather clumsily) is that they don’t care that Jews would be upset that the minorities that are flooding over their border might also not like them.
This is the same as saying they don’t care that Republicans would be upset that minorities coming from Mexico might also not like them.
To be antisemitic a statement would need to denigrate or insult Jews for some intrinsic quality like greed or clannishness or because they were responsible for some evil. The fact the poster doesn’t care how Jews feel is just a statement of their own lack of compassion but is not antisemitic.
The whole fake news cycle is just more of the left trying to take down Elon Musk because he is smarter, richer, and more powerful than any of the tiny, weak, pissants that attack him. Does anyone think he cares about their pathetic attempt at power using their lies and resentment tactics?

Musk is on their sh*t list for speaking truth to power

they are looking for any excuse to hurt him

but Musk has said he does not care

even if it costs him money he will not sit down and shut up

I assume the companies decide on the placement of their ads via X software.

It is up to the companies to refine their placement if it is within their grasp.
