Arabs were not driven out of Israel in 1948. Arabs were encouraged to leave Israel by the surrounding Arab countries, so they could return after those countries annihilated the Israelis. The Arabs who had lived there for generations and owned houses did not leave.
Jews, on the other hand, were expelled from all the Arab countries, often with just the shirts on their backs, when Israel was granted nationhood.
Try reading From Time Immemorial by Joan Peters for a comprehensive documentation of the area from sources in 5 different languages. She was in the Carter Administration and started writing the book to document the plight of the poor Palestinians...but then ran into a number of ‘red flags’ that portrayed a very different picture.
