Ron DeSantis contends a convicted Donald Trump wouldn’t win General Election
Florida Politics ^ | September 13, 2023 | A.G. Gancarski

During an interview airing on CBS Evening News, Florida’s Governor was blunt about former President Donald Trump’s chances — or lack thereof — of winning the presidency if convicted in any of his upcoming trials.

“I think the chance of getting elected President after being convicted of a felony is as close to zero as you can get,” said Gov. Ron DeSantis.

“I didn’t think even before all this, that the former President should have run again. I mean, I think that there’s too many voters (for whom) he’s a deal breaker for them,” DeSantis told Norah O’Donnell.

The comments are the latest example of a Governor who has become more confident in making the case that Trump should not have run for another term given his various legal problems.

“Well, look, I never thought he should run to begin with, even before all these legal cases when he left office in January of 2021,” DeSantis said in August on Boston’s WBZ NewsRadio.

“I think he did a lot of good things, and I give him credit for that,” DeSantis added. “But I never thought it was a good idea for him to run again, because, one, I think we need a candidate who’s going to be able to win a clear-cut victory; two, we need a candidate that’s actually going to be able to deliver on all the things that we’ve been talking about, (and) that requires focus and discipline.”

Okay, I'm sure that will stir things up, but it is a real point to consider. How many non-politically engaged voters will vote for Trump if he is convicted?

And, yes, he is being persecuted, most of the charges are political, and all that. We've been discussing that in many threads on FR, but what about the non-engaged voters who, even if Republican, get their news from places other than FR, Breitbart, etc.?

Don't shoot the messenger, this is a serious topic and question.

Finishing behind Christie and Haley in the primaries doesn’t seem like a winning hand, either.

How many people genuinely believe that the legal processes going on now are legitimate prosecutions and trials ?

Even hard core Dems may like the outcome, but they know they are Bullsh!t.

How many votes are going to be swayed by an obviously fraudulent legal spectacle?

I think the probability of backfire is more likely.

BTW, DeSantis is such a punk to try to politically gain off of convictions when he has already defined the prosecutions as political and not legally legitimate.

He is is at 10 percent, and going to zero, but apparently, not interested in a dignified departure.

What if he was running against a convicted joe Biden?

Now, that would be priceless! But, RINOs in Congress won't help on that front, nor will Biden let the DOJ/FBI prosecute him.

What RDS does not realize is the left will do the exact same thing to him in 2028. Or anybody else for that matter.

when you have a democrat DA and a democrat judge in a democrat court it’s not exactly a real charge.

it’s just a political attack.

“How many non-politically engaged voters will vote for Trump if he is convicted?”

Would you expect DeSantis to say anything differently? His poll numbers suggest he would win easily. His persecution by the deep state suggests it believes Trump will win easily.

The North Carolina poll of yesterday was very powerful.

He won NC by 1% in 2020. He polls +4% now, and this is not important.

What IS important is why this perspective above fails — namely he leads in this poll by 5% WITH INDEPENDENTS. He lost Independents in the NC exit polls of 2020 by 4%.

This is decisive because Independents don’t give a damn about primaries. They don’t give a damn about tax and spend, either. They DO care about the Swamp and any conviction that might happen . . . they know exactly why it happened.

They won’t care. He’s added 9% among Independents.

He lost the popular vote by 7 million in 2020. 5M of that in California and 2M in NY. He lead NOWHERE by over 1million. Nowhere. No state.

The Biden support is hyper concentrated and Trump’s gain with Independents is decisive. They know the Swamp. A conviction will mean nothing, other than an easier target for a gunshot in a cell after election day victory.

I'm not saying that any of the proceedings are called for or at all fair.

That said, "convicted" is a loaded term, and the Dems know this.

Imagine 24/7 sound bites with the lead descriptor for Trump being "convicted".

Low info voters will know..."porn star hush money", "indicted", and maybe "convicted".

It will be a successful Dem campaign, sorry to report.

Political or not, it will be a conviction. What will unengaged voters think and do, can Trump counter the bad news sufficiently? Could anyone?
