Parque Baja California should be the ideal community park. Mature trees provide shade and benches give visitors a comfortable place to sit and feel the ocean breeze.
But running through the middle of the park is a drainage culvert with water flowing year round.
Martin Acosta recalls seeing a couple of kids jump into the water to retrieve a soccer ball there earlier this year. One of the kids said the water “smelled like doo-doo,” said Acosta, who is an architect and environmental activist.
“The kid was right, because that’s exactly what it is,” he said.
The sewer water in Parque Baja California is a microcosm of Tijuana’s failing infrastructure — an ongoing crisis with grave impacts on economies, quality of life and public health on both sides of the border.

That’s been going on since 1976.
WE need to build them a sanitation plant if it affects us. I wouldn’t go into the ocean in SD.
Well, they;ve been sending us their crap for a very long time.
I thought the Romans, or somebody like that, figured out how to deal with doo doo some time ago.
My mom lived in SD county and she loved trips across the border to Rosarito Beach and especially to the ‘lobster village’, Puerto Nuevo-Newport. Thing was you smelled the sewage as soon as you got into Tijuana.
Yes, the Romans figured out how to implement waste water systems 2,000 years ago. The problem is that the Tijuanans literally give a million shi’ites a day.
Mexico is not just a failed state, it is a failed society. Anyone want to guess why it is a failed society?
Because the bad old United States got in a war with them and stole half their country, and the half with all the paved roads at that.
I agree with you! I just don’t understand why the CA give and Mexican govt doesn’t work together to modernize their sewer and water utilities!
Backflush! Now!
It's always the water. ;O)
I guess I don’t want barbecued iguana after all.
If you could smell our government in Washington, it would have the same lovely aroma as Rio Caca here.
Illegal sewer hookups ... what could possibly go wrong?
I was told here that Honolulu smells of urine—don’t go there...
I was flying helos out of NAS Imperial Beach ( also known as Ream Field) in the late 60”s...The area between the Base and the Mex boarder was known as “The Slews”it was a sewer pit back then.
I was learning to Skydive there.. one day I failed to correct for the winds and landed in the Slew... The Station Fire Dept helped me back over the fence... They wouldn’t let me on the truck until they washed me off with a fire hose !
BTW.. I got a pretty sever ear infection out of it!
Oh the days of youth
I lived in Tijuana Beach and Rosarito. When walking across bridges you can look down and see the open sewers emptying into the beach. I never went to the water and never ate local seafood...lobster? Hell no.
modernize their sewers? Oh, c’mon. Try and keep up. You know the Kalis need fortylevenmillion bucks to build a train track to nowhere. I mean-—doodness dwascious. what do you expect them to do? Keep the place sanitized?
Well, the Romans did install slit trenches to run the poo water into the ocean. But they made up for that bit of civility by running their drinking water thru lead pipes. When they went nutz from the lead they didn’t care about the air freshness? Then they quit calling themselves Romans and settled on Italians. And there’s still enough nutcases to go around.
