The devastating wildfires that have scorched Hawaii and destroyed much of the town of Lahaina on the island of Maui have been fueled by invasive alien grassland species that have grown on abandoned farms that used to cultivate pineapple and other crops.
The grasses, which grow faster after rainy winters, create fuel for fires and are the biggest factor in turning Hawaii from a place where wildfires are uncommon to one in which they are increasingly considered a familiar risk, much as in mainland California.

I’ve been watching our local farmers plow under for almost 80 years...they work sooooo hard.
I will admit that this tragedy seemed like a perfect storm of terrible circumstances. I may have missed it (and I admit to not reading through most of the articles so far) but I don’t remember seeing a fire truck in any pictures or reading about a fire department being involved in any way. Did this place even have a fire department? Maybe they had battery powered trucks and pumps that needed a charge.

NAFTA and free trade. Now they get pineapple from Mexico, Brazil, etc. Hawaii used to have big plantations. Just look at Hawaii 5-0 or old Elvis movies. Wall Street and DC put a stop to that culture.
The death toll certainly makes it a news story, plus the vast destruction of property.
That is more than *a little worse than usual*.
Horseshoes. Every single plant and animal on the Hawaiian islands is “alien”. It’s a volcanic chain in the middle of the Pacific. Nothing living on that island did not come from somewhere else.
There was nothing the fire departments could have done to fight these fires because of the high winds. They had to wait until the winds died down. And that goes for the aerial fire fighters...
Will Cane whose mom lives there, said that back in the day, sugarcane and pineapples grew where the grasses grow now. Doesn’t know if it means anything but it was an observation.
One of the “secrets” about Hawaii is it kind of a crap hole. The locals like to blame the haoles but mainlanders aren’t dumping trash abandoning cars all over the place. That’s the people of the land. So much for aloha.
80 plus mph wind will do that.
Un-attended farm land overgrown with weeds and scrub that create a lot of fuel. Just like the overgrown forests that aren’t maintained because of green policies. Let it go “back to nature”, and all you are doing is creating a tinder box.

Actions have consequences and apparently the powers to be don’t care....
Larry Ellison owns 98% of the Island. I expect a huge lawsuit, blaming Larry for failing to maintain the property in a safe manner.
My guess is that the land is owned by the pineapple and sugar came growers or the government units which took over the land when no taxes were paid on it. Must not be anything that is economical to be grown there.
Grass fires don’t burn all that hot or long.
We had one here start the other day by numbskulls driving a trailer on the rim after a flat tire. Yard mowers. Seemingly, not too bright. They drove on it for several miles.
